Hi All, Salty has been raised on Roudybush pellets, but I ran out, and so has the local store ( Bad Daddy !!). What are considered the best quality pellets for Amazons?

Casper likes his Harrison's with the blue label (adult lifetime coarse). We were told to use it by the vet so who are we to argue?

Although I do not have an Amazon I have always fed birds Harrisons pellets. They start out on high potency (red label) and then go to the regular pellets. My grey loved the Harrisons. They are truly organic in nature with no preservatives so you need to refrigerate them. [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]

We've never kept ours in the fridge, just in a tupperware* box to stop them getting stale.
*other brands of sealed containers are available.

If you read the printing on the bag it says to refrigerate.

And talking to Harrison's they need to be kept in the same bag they come in to help keep them fresh and not to transfer to any other container.

On the label it actually says that refrigeration MAY help maintain freshness. We buy the big bags which last about three months, keep it in a cool place and decant about a weeks worth at a time into the airtight box. That way we are not opening and closing the original bag every day, letting the air in.
It also says to smell the product to check for freshness. And if it was at all niffy it would all end up on the floor of the cage with everything else that Casper reckons is not ripe yet/too ripe/not to his required standard of gourmet eating.

And why wouldn't one want to maintain freshness and extend shelf life of your bird food by refrigeration? Harrison's also recommends storage in original container. I guess it's difficult when you buy in bulk to do these things.

Reason 1. Because we don't need to, it keeps fine and all gets used before getting stale.
Reason 2. Because we don't have a huge american fridge, just a small under the counter jobby that is too small even for my beers.
Yep Harrison's haven't considered the practicalities of every day life in a small English kitchen.

We use Bird Paradise blends. Their food is a mix of pellets, dried fruits, veggies and nuts. They make different blends for different species, we use the cockatoo/macaw mix. Rosie loves it, but since I got her at BP she has eaten it since she was a baby. When I give her other brands, she doesn't like it as much. I am not sure what brand pellets they use.
Here is a link to what I think you would use for Salty: [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks] This is for a 5 lb bag but they have different sizes.
I get Rosie's food in bulk like Jean Pierre. I freeze the majority of it and keep some in a large Tupperware. Not what the store recommends but it works for us.
