What an inspiring read.. Thank you so much for posting this. It makes sense that traumatised humans and parrots could somehow support each other.

Yes. Thank you for sharing the article, Merrick. A bit of poignant reality there . I know that parrots can have a therapeutic effect upon many of us. And I know there are some special humans out there who have a wonderfully therapeutic effect upon birds in their custody who have experienced varying degrees of emotional and/or physical trauma. Given the right situation, I can certainly understand how such healing benefit may flow in both directions.

I will read the article later when I have more time but I just wanted to say that I think that there is a lot we don't know about animals and their ability to tell when humans are unwell. They have trained some dogs to detect cancers or tumours in humans so a start is being made.

OK, I have now read the article and it brought a tear to my eye. Very well written and not the usual journalistic flim-flam. It should be essential reading for anyone involved in the rehab of both humans and parrots as it seems they can do a lot to help each other, even if it just (in the case of the vets) being made to feel useful again when they are cast adrift from their often horrific military experience and are expected to just settle down to 'normal' life.
