Rosie is usually a pretty tough girl. There isn't a whole lot that she is fearful of. Usually the worst is wariness of a new toy. The resolution to that is fairly easy, I touch it to my nose and then her beak and then she is fine with it.
So I generally forget about the parrot fear of being eaten by new items. Today, Jef was replacing the ceiling light in the kitchen. I walked with Rosie through the kitchen without thinking when the light base was hanging off the ceiling. Out of the blue, she lets out a terrified shriek and takes off flying across the kitchen. It then dawned on me that the light scared her. I brought her upstairs while Jef finished the light and I forgot all about it. Tonight while we were getting her ready for bed we walked into the kitchen. Rosie was on my shoulder. She quickly got down onto my arm, pupils HUGE, cuddling into me, looking at the light and saying SHHHH (what I say if she is hurt or scared), over and over again. All the while staring up at the new, finished light.
I have to give my girl credit. I said, oh are you afraid of the new light? She nodded while saying snuggling into me and saying SHHHH. I told her the light was fine and was not going to hurt us (while snuggling and kissing her). I then asked if we should say hi to the new light. She was not convinced. So I lifted my free hand up to towards the light a few times while saying Hi New Light! After about a minute, she started saying Hi, Beep Beep and Peek a Boo while staring at the light. Then she started dancing. My brave girl. Hopefully she will remember that it isn't going to eat her tomorrow morning. :)
Anyone have a similar experience with their parrot and fear of new items?
