View Full Version : Huggy bugged with a U2 :)
These guys can be dusty..destructive and the biggest loves on the planet! I love Mi Amigo! Do other birds produce this kind/amount of dust?

Sassy is not dusty like Amigo, very light amount from her.

Looks like you had a good cuddle. Rosie doesn't produce any dust. Just messes from feathers and feather casings. :)
U2 cockatoo dust is so much finer than say..a chalk dust. You would not even know it's there except for the white powder it leaves behind. I've developed a hive condition that I've never had before and am going in for a physical on Tuesday, blood tests and all..I'm hoping my birds aren't the cause. If so..I will live and die with it.

Oh no. I hope it is an easy fix and not related to your guys/girls. I hope it is an easy visit. Please let us know what is going on once you know.
Ashie originally wanted an M2, but once we talked to staff at BP we realized it was a no go. The dust can aggrivate asthma which my kids and husband get. Very rarely, but it wasn't worth tempting fate.

I guess you know how intolerant Macaws are of bird dust. Do you run air filtration Mare?

Dianne - I had no idea until I read about it on the forums. I have read about a couple of macaws passing due to dust. :(
Yes, I have an air filter running non-stop in the bird's room. I change the filters, regularly. My hives have given me grief for around a year. I have NO idea as to where they come from but am getting on with the investigation!

Yes apparently Macaws have a very sensitive respiratory system. By necropsy of a Macaw that died it was found the bird died from asthma related to the dust of one grey. Air filtration was in use but was ineffective. The grey was re homed because there were other Macaws in the home.
What..? Do not even TEMP me to rehome my cockatoos :). I know, for a fact, that cockatoos and macaws can be homed together. Not ideal, as some suggest but works, mostly.
From what I've read, birds from one continent do well together. Birds that originate from South America can adjust to one another. Birds that originate in Australia can adjust with other birds from that area, in the respiratory part, anyways. The problem comes with the mix! :)

No dust here... just a lot of chewed up cardboard.

Sucre leaves a trail of dust everywhere. He is not overly fond of showers, I have heard that helps. He will allow us to spray him with a spray bottle of warm water, but I don't think that's quite "deep" enough to take care of the dust.

Our mulluccan is a dust making machine.Tons of air purification here...and he lives away from most of the other birds.Macaws are in a distant space.

Mare I was not writing that for you. You do not have a Mac anyway. I had one grey and the dust was enough for me.
