I'm a member on a closed umbrella cockatoo forum and feel set apart from most in that Amigo flys free during most days. I believe the reason these birds sound off in the evenings is because they are calling to their flock (instinctively) to come in for the night. This is my thought and I'm sticking to it.

What are your thoughts on why birds are loud right before nite-nite time?

I think you are right Mare even these Lovebirds call out if I am late covering the cages...it is like they are telling me hey we are ready to go to sleep now....

I'm so in love with your birds, Charlie! I'm glad to know that you are also in tune with them :). My birds tend to be my universe, unfortunately sometimes, but they are what they are and I love them, dearly! Amigo is outside, at the moment, trying to move some buzzards away from the perimeters of our yard with his amazing voice! :)

My understanding too is they care taking a roll call making sure everyone is safe and sound for the night. Same in the morning, to make sure everyone got through the night safely too.

My guys are pretty quiet in the evening. Example, last night I got engrossed in playing a scrabble game in the other room and forgot to turn out the light and cover their cage until about 8:30 when I noticed. Poor birdies were half asleep and quiet. It may be because there are two of them. Mare do your other birds answer Amigo's calls?

Heck, YEAH!!, Dianne! I liken it to being in a room with someone who smokes cigarettes. The only way to keep from getting nauseous is to smoke one, too. My poor birdies :(

My little canary wing parrot Max, was a screamer, and a loud lil f....er he was too. Hours and hours of it, and only putting him on your shoulder would quiet him. GOD, I miss him so much sometime, I get choked up. Salty on the other hand is a quiet amazon, with only running the kitchen sink setting him off with any great regularity.

Lady is loud in the morning but as long as I dim the light while I'm up past her bedtime she's pretty merciful and will just perch in her sleep spot in her cage.

I think it feels good for them to yell :) I almost feel they need it. I dont mind when RUBY my macaw is yelling when I let her out.

Interestingly, Rosie doesn't do the morning evening yell.

She will yell incessantly if she gets to the top of her cage. Which is absolutely ridiculous bc she is strutting and doing a victory dance the entire time. Lol

She also yells if I yell for the kids/dogs. If the family is having an animated conversation she yells.

But she mostly yells for me if I am farther away than she would like. Or if Jef and I are talking. Sigh...

Parrots have very strong opinions and feel they should be presented forcefully.
