Yesterday my mom was telling me that Rosie flew (and crash landed) a few times when we were away. Rosie also realized she could hop onto the hanging light in her room from the side her cage. My mom said it would be quiet, then she would hear feathers flapping and sounds of giddiness. She said Rosie would be happily hanging upside down from the chained light fixture swinging around like a looney trapeze artist. Silly girl.

I have not witnessed the light fixture trick....yet. Since we have been home Rosie has flown to my window blinds a few times. Last night we were in the front room watching a Netflix marathon of The Office (yet again). Rosie was on her cage in her room which is connected to the front room. I asked Rosie if she wanted to cuddle and we sat down in my son's bungee chair. If you are not familiar with it, it is a chair made of bungee cords. Very bouncy but very comfortable. Rosie settled on top of my head and I moved to get more comfortable. Which bounced us around a bit. This prompted Rosie to take off, flying and then crash landing. After making sure she was ok, back to the bungee chair. We bounced a bit and off she flew again. This happened a few times and Rosie seemed quite pleased. The last couple of times I asked if she wanted to do it again and she would bounce and say "YEAH!" So I guess we found Miss Things new launching pad. The last couple of times she flew around the room instead of just crashing. She seems to have discovered her wings can do fun things. I think I may be in trouble!!! [emoji4]

Charlie - my daughter loves The Office. This is our 3rd time going through the series. Steve Carrell is hysterical. I hadn't seen Evan Almighty but I just watched clips of the scene you referred to. Very funny!

As I am typing Rosie just flew to my window blinds. Sigh...

If you have space in your home for her to fly, I think that's wonderful for her! Sounds like she's getting pretty good! :) I couldn't trust my cockatoos for a second hanging from ANYTHING! They would have a cord cut in half or chunks taken out of whatever, in a heartbeat! What is Rosie's wingspan? It's got to be close to an eagle's!!

Mare - we don't have a huge amount of space, but that does not seem to be deterring her. Lol

When she was a baby, she chewed through the cord for her light above her cage. I was a mess. She shorted out a fuse and I could smell burning. She seemed fine and I called the store to talk to her store mom. She reassured me that since parrots don't have saliva, she didn't electricute herself. Uggh! So it is entirely possible she will do some more damage.

I haven't measured her wing span, but I have read that it can be up to 48 inches. Here is a link with some info on GWs. I believe it is an aviary, but some interesting/cute info... [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]

Casper enjoys peeling the plastic off wires, give half a chance. I have put spiral loom wrap around all the wires he can reach, just to slow him down a bit in case we don't notice what he is up to.
I don't know that not having saliva makes a difference, I can get electric shocks touching live stuff with dry hands. Maybe the beak is not a conductor but the tongue is.

Oh Kendra I know how that goes. Went through it recently with my HH but solved it to. Be careful she doesn't fly into something too quickly and break a bone. They can pick up speed though she is a larger bird so she probably can't pick up that much speed but still your going to have a lot of crashing into walls and windows. Especially Windows ...

I always worry. I check her beak, breastbone and wings every time she crash lands. My blinds are open but down so I think that helps. :)

I'm glad you solved the issue with your HH. :)

Another thing I forgot to mention about electric shocks is that you have to complete a circuit so touching a live wire on its own is ok providing you are insulated from earth sources. But cut through the insulation and make bridge between live and negative or either and earth wires with your body and you will feel it.
Circuit breakers on the fuse board should prevent all the smoke from escaping from the wires. You did know that wires are filled with smoke didn't you?
