I have always loved sleeping bird photos. It has been difficult to get one of a Linnie because they just seem to close their eyes at times but not very often. My favorite one is of Chipper and Daisy the budgies I used to have. Please add to this thread as it can be so dang cute.

Aww..I love the pic you have of Chipper and Daisy, sweet. I went through my photos and the only one I had with someone's eyes closed was of Amigo. He's not asleep, though..

I have also gone through photos and can't find a pic of Lady sleeping. I don't ever recall seeing her with her eyes closed. She gets covered at night so if she does close her eyes I'm not seeing her at those times. I will try to get a pic of her sleeping.

I notice some birds sit with eyes closed relaxing and some tuck their heads in the feathers. I wonder if this is species specific?

This one is from the internet:

I've seen the cockatiels sleep with their head tucked back and maybe once saw Sassy like that. I've never seen Amigo do it, though. That doesn't mean he doesn't :).

Zaf sleeps in all manner of positions. Either stretched out like a rabbit with his head to the side (his cheek laying flat against the bedding surface). Or perched with his head turned backwards and his beak tip tucked beneath his wing. Or perched with his head facing forward and his eyes closed. He likes to nap on my chest or even on my shoulder at times... while at other times he'll fall asleep on a comfy cushion. A perch is his least favorite place to catch some winks. His eyes are typically always closed during his slumber sessions. The exception was the incident I reported a few weeks ago when his visible eye was wide open - it scared me to death!

Note: A little considered fact is that the reason birds are prone to turn their heads backwards with their beaks placed beneath their wings is because it pulls their center of gravity back over their feet (so they're not as likely to fall off of their perches from the weight of their heads extended forward).

I've only ever seen Rosie sleep upright one footing it. And everytime I've gone to get the camera and unvelcro the case she opens her eyes to check out what I'm doing.

The center of gravity makes total sense. A few months back Rosie fell of her perch one afternoon, I heard a big thump. She looked scared, although I never saw the fall she had been quietly snoozing away and then "thump!" She's never been a hopper or a jumper of any kind. Thankfully she wasn't hurt and a grooming session calmed her right down.

I think it's adorable when they lay flat. I think if my hubby fell asleep with her though she would lay flat against his shoulder and nuzzle his neck, she's done that before but for Rosie that is some nesting behavior so we cannot encourage this. I would love to cuddle with Rosie like that.

Tony, I think Zaf and Casper have a similar fondness for comfy kipping. Casper also like the back of the sofa (as shown in the pic above), or a bit of a human to perch on. Thanks for the explanation of why they sleep with their heads on back-to-front, it is all the more relevant when they are standing on one leg with the other drawn up under their feathers. I had presumed it was just so that they could rest their neck muscles by supporting the weight of their beak on their back.
I did read somewhere that they are able to turn their head much further than humans because they have something like double the number of joints in the neck region of their spine.

I've had Charlie for 8 years going on 9:th_smile:. She's my girl. She was a rescue to. Assumed to be around 40 years old. In time, your Rosie may do it. Rosie looks to be young to me less than 10yrs old? She's absolutely gorgeous! I just love Green wings .. the colors on them are perfect. All my favorite:th_biggrin:

I just love how many folks have sleeping birds that actually lie down! This is so cool! Platforms in my bird's cages is in their future, for sure.

Tropics1989 -Thank you. Charlie is just as beautiful. ☺ You have a good eye, yes Rosie is 3. She will be 4 in April. She is very kinetic, always moving or making sounds. I am hoping as she matures she will chill a bit and be able to relax.

Lol she will. As a parrot ages they mature and become chill. Right now she's like a kid on candy all over the place! hehe. Then she'll go through the hormone stage, then the mature stage, and finally old age but old age isn't for probably like 40 years from now lol.
