This is an area I have no experience at all. I would have to be "schooled" intensely and I would still be very nervous.

Best wishes for all to go well Charlie!

Just an update Rio and Mango are doing great both are taking turns in the breeder box! Rio came out flew over to say hello then went back to the box then Mango stayed perched on the open door guarding all. Don't know how many eggs are in there yet have not looked yet...

Thanks for the update. I could not keep myself from peaking inside. Rio will be a good Mom. When the chicks are hatched its a good idea to offer the parents and nice soft, warm mash with protein items. Charlie I think this web page has lots of good information. It is intended for cockatiels but lovebirds would fit in also.

One egg will be better for first time parents. Congrats Daddy!

Charlie are you going to candle the egg to see if it is fertile? Easy to do. Use a little pen light if you have one. The smaller the light source the better you see.

3 eggs now !!! I think they are OK the parents are right in the box with them one or the other! Rio tries to bite me when I change water out she really has that momma bird thing going now!

spiritbird

That is so good. I hope they all hatch. Kobe and Tango are going in the nest box but I have not seen any hank panky.

Its a good idea to write numbers on the eggs. That way you know which one should hatch first.. Can you get any photos without disturbing them?

Dianne I will try to get a pic in a day or so right now I think I would lose a finger due to Rio and her trying to bite me. I have date when each egg appeared and approximate hatch date marked on calander might be a Halloween bird or 2. Will nam it Boo or Spooky!!!!! Hehehe!

OMG!!! 3 eggs, little Rio must be exhausted. I love Boo! That's Rosie nickname for me " Hi Boo!" 30 times a day, and it never gets old.

I can't wait to see those babies.

Lady

Oh :congrats5: Papa Charlie! How exciting, I bet they are soo tiny those little eggs. So are you going to keep all the babies? Will they need a separate cage eventually or can they all live in the same cage? Halloween babies, guess you have a small pumpkin patch going on there~

wingman

Peachy yeah I bet Rio is tender and hates all males right now! That may be why she is trying to bite me! Alice yes we're gonna keep the babies, that will give a total of 6 lovebirds . I have a large flight cage and a smaller large cage so should not need another cage right now hopefully!!! After this clutch if there is anymore I will have to sell or give up for adoption.

It does seem like forever but I guess we have to be patient. We just can't wait to see those baby birds. Must be any day now.

Rio is so aggressive right now she got ahold an drew blood big time yesterday! I guess it is normal for mother bird to be that way. No way I'm gonna get to candle those eggs

Lady
10-25-2015, 12:54 AM
OUCH, I'm sorry she got you, your right that she is a good protector as most mama's are. I wouldn't try to candle them either at this point. It's best to let nature take it's course as it always does. You'll be making the announcements when it's time.

How long has it been? Is your best box inside of the cage?

wingman
10-25-2015, 10:02 PM
Yes box is inside !the first should hatch anytime now...soon as I see little pink naked birdies will post pic!!

spiritbird

If you can attach box on outside next time you will have more control. Close off the entry and no bites and easy cleaning. That way you can change the substrate if needed.

Praying for all to go smoothly.

If the parents are feeding the babies you really do not have to hand feed as long as the little crops are showing full. Just handle them often but not too long after 2 weeks so they will be tame. Use your voice near them. I am sure Mango and Rio will take care of feeding them. Make sure and feed M and R nice rich foods, some soft and warm so they will then feed it to the babies.
Do not put any food in the nest box, they will not eat it.

The finest food for baby Lovebirds and their Parents is soaked sprouting seed , the young can digest this, along with Fruit ,Apple, Pear, Mango. veg such as Broccoli. Kale Spinach but not lettuce

For soaked seed all you do is take some of their seed ,soak it in warm water overnight, drain rinse, place somewhere warm till it sprouts (2-3-days) rinse and feed to all till the young are feeding them selves,
