I've been trying to get this shot of Rosie's eye in the sunlight for over a year now. A soft stream of sunlight was coming into the patio walkway where Rosie was sitting last weekend and she leaned in to get her head scritched as she supervised me cleaning the pantry.

I was thrilled to get this shot because I've been describing to people that normally her eyes look dark brown in daylight but in the sun the dark brown/burgundy hue really comes out. In addition to this I have been asking other Moluccan owners and other large too owners if they have noticed the markings/ridges on the lower mandible and upper beak. No one knew what I was talking about. Here you can see I've captured the white vertical ridges on her lower mandible. The upper beak has several wavy ridges.

I'm going to crop this photo of just her eye and hang it in our hallway of photos.

Wow that is some fancy eye color. I can kind of relate to the difference of when her eye has direct contact with the sun. I have hazel eyes but most of the time I see them as green. Depending on what I'm wearing they can look more or less green.

And the ridges, I thought mostly all parrots have ridges on their beaks because they are somewhat like our fingernails. Are you specifically speaking about the white marks at the very tip of her lower mandible? I've never noticed them on Lady.

Amazingly beautiful photo!! I've seen Amigo's eyes in the sun but because he's male, the red doesn't come like this, mainly his pupil really stands out. I'll have to see if the Sassy girl has this quality about her eye, I've surely never seen anything like it!

Now you have me wondering about the ridges in the beak, I'll check it out :).

Yes Lady I am talking about the white lines at the very tip that are vertical on the lower mandible, they appear to be slightly raised (although I'm not sticking my finger in for a feel lol). Probably a gripping mechanism of some sort. Someone mentioned they thought it could be for gripping nuts for cracking, like the grooves in a wrench. Makes sense to me. There must be a reason they are there.

Mare, from all my research this past year it does appear of the brown eyed toos you are correct, the males have dark brown eyes and the females only slightly lighter brown eyes. In bright daylight I can see her pupil, so I understand what you mean only seeing Amigo's pupil in sunlight. Unlike the macaws that are spectacularly expressive with their eyes it's tough for us too owners to see the pupils. Part of why I love this shot.

Isn't it amazing..the color these overlooked and underappreciated lives possess?? But then...their colors are often why so many people had to possess them...double edged sword....

That's really neat looking. Almost photoshopped looking but I know its not. So cool!
