I will often get negative remarks from my sister about the way I food my birds. "You feed them better than you feed yourself" is what she says. I am trying to provide education on why we feed our pet birds like we do but it just does not sink in. I am thinking elderly people (older than me) are from the "old school" way of feeding our pets and it is difficult for them to see how times have changed. Does anyone else experience this from a family member?

I haven't but I can see how that would happen.

No one really knows what I feed the diva. I am sure they see the mason jars with nuts, cookies and treats and her huge food rubbermaid. But I don't think it really registers with guests. They will get something from a jar to give her but that is the extent of it. If Jef really knew he would probably be annoyed. I know when I go to the parrot store and her food is over $100 for the month, I cringe. When the Nuts.com order comes and the receipt is with it, I cringe and then quickly toss it. ;) My mom is probably the only one who is slightly aware. She will just roll her eyes and say, "Rosie, you are one expensive girl!". But then, she is the first one to run over to Rosie with a yogurt covered nut, an apple or some other yummy thing. :)

Just in case of an emergency it's a good idea to write an instruction page for how to feed miss Diva bird.

Being single that is not a problem. My only issues is when I do my fall nut ordering, that is when I don't want to add up the bills for that. Since I keep the nuts in the freezer (I have two 25 c ft freezers) and keep the nuts in those Vittles Vaults, when the new supply comes in I have to pull the old ones out and store in the smaller containers so that I am sure the older stock gets fed first.

When I had the 2nd freezer delivered I knew the guys were probably wondering why I needed a second one and I just mentioned it was for the old boyfriend. :th_toofunny:

Oh this hits close to home.Having the number and variety of birds we have ...our food bill for them will hit close to $2000 a month.Im always hearing they eat better than we do,but I think we all eat equally well. Its a matter of being involved in the food choices or being on the outside looking in.

I order nuts from nuts.com but they are all expensive. They have two new nut butters that sound delicious. Its so tempting.

You're right, Dianne, the "old school" way of thinking..seed only,,just doesn't cut it! Most of my family, including Tim, has taken care of the bird's for a couple of days at a time and know what and how I feed them. I keep a list of what goes in their bowls and for which bird..they don't all get the same thing. If this really happens when I'm gone..?..? I'm not sure but I do know everyone, including birds, is happy to see me when I get home :). When Wyatt is in charge of feeding, he takes a photo on his phone, of the bowls I make up..this is how he runs it!
