Did you know Purslane is a very nutritious weed growing in many places. The secret is to grow it organically so your bird will get the benefit. It is an annual succulent. There are about 40 different varieties. It is also known as Pigweed, little Hogweed, Pusley, and Verdolaga The plant contains the following:

Potassium 212 mg 6%

Purslane is one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids for vegans ([Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]), vegetarians, and other people who do not or cannot eat fish. I ate a leaf of this plant this past weekend and it was good tasting. Gave a bit to my birds and they also ate the leaf/stems. My yoga instructor has large plants so she is making a pot for me to grow inside for the birds. How to grow indoors: How to Grow Purslane Microgreens in a Container ([Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]) The plant begins to lose the nutrients the minute you harvest the leaves so it must be given to our birds right away. This is why it is best to grow inside or grow outside in organic soil.
The downside like parsley and spinach purslane has a high concentration of oxalic acid so it should be served sparingly to birds. I would estimate about 2 or 3 times per week mixed in chop.
