I love cactus plants and would have a whole room full of them if I could. Mare I guess you see them every day in a natural state. Mine has been blooming for over a month now so I thought I should get a photo before it is too late. This is the first time I have used the mini tripod that came with my camera. It truly does improve the sharpness. Took this photo outside with natural light on a cloudy day.

Now that is what I call a cactus in bloom. When I bought the cactus the sales person said they put one cactus on top of a other kind when they are small and
eventually they grow together. The bottom is green and top is maroon. The picture k owners just fell off. I put two of them in the soil but they look dead.

WOW! that is amazing, I would love to have a yard full of cactus like that. although I could do without the nest of tarantula's people claim that nest in them. :th_biggrin:

Nick, I've never seen a nest of tarantulas in my cacti! The only time I see tarantulas, around these parts, is in October..think Halloween :). They really are a docile spider, I've picked them up to move them off the road. They come out at beginning of rainy season (short lived around here :( )
Two nights ago, I got stung by a scorpion in my bed! I'd rather sleep with a tarantula than a scorpion ANYDAY!!

That is the most beautiful cactus I've seen Dianne.
Mare, that vibrating cactus story with a nest of tarantulas was a story I told on another thread and was an urban legend we looked up on snopes.com
Where did you get stung? What did you do for it?

I found out the flowering cactus is called a barrel cactus. Someone offered me tons of seeds but I really do not want more. Space is limited and winter light is limited to one spot. Thanks for your comments. In the winter I water the cactus pot only once per month but in the growing season like now I water and fertilize twice per month.

They say most people eat a bunch of creepy crawlers when they sleep, I wouldn't want a tarantula or a scorpion in my bed. :th_eek:

The cacti in those pics looks like a night blooming cerius,,,could be spelling that wrong,,, the blooms are huge and fragrant, the fruit bats love them. I have one here, its very cool.
That cactus I took the pic of, does bloom at night..it's just too dang hot during the day for those delicate petals. I find that interesting, Birdbabe, about the bats!

Wish I could smell their sweetness.
Great picture Dianne :goodjob:
I wouldn't want a tarantula or scorpion in my bed either, Nick! We have what I call, wood scorpions. They aren't the big six inch, yellow/green monsters you find in the desert,, they are brown, 1 and 1/2 inch max but they do pack a wallop of a sting. It stung me twice before I could even get it off me. The area was right above my knee and it swelled red and hot about six inches around the stings, it took three days for it to settle down..then it itched like a MUTHA'!

I tagged PeachyDoll in this post because she was recently bit/stung by one and had a interesting treatment for it involving charcoal that she said worked really well. She'll share it with you.

Activated charcoal in a tablet or powder form is known to draw poison out of the body from spider bites, food poisoning etc. I was stung by a scorpion a few weeks back and I thought I'd try it out on that. I wet my wrist where I had been stung and poured about 1/4 teaspoon on the area. In order to keep the charcoal from falling off I wet a cotton pad with water and place it over the charcoal. The charcoal got very hot and I keep remoistening my cotton pad to keep the charcoal in place. An hour later no pain and not even a mark where the scorpion stung me.
Mr Peepers, I don't know if the tag didn't work or I couldn't take a hint. Thanks for the prompt! :)
Ok, wow..thanks for that info, PeachyDoll! Thanks Nick for the prompt! I will definitely try this next time I get a bite. As I age, my body has become much more sensitive to any kind of inscect bite, mosquito bites turn very nasty. I've never reacted to scorpion stings like I do now. A bee's sting is pretty devastating, next doctors visit I will talk to her about maybe needing an epi-pen. Thanks, again :)
