View Full Version : What The FROG!?!?

We have lived in our home for about 9 years. I have NEVER seen a frog in my yard.
That is until this year. A week or so ago I had a couple friends and families over to swim. As I opened the umbrella that shades the lounge chairs something cold, wet and solid falls and bounces off my arm. Which prompts me to jump and screech. Much to the delight of all the kids. After I composed myself I looked and there was a small gray frog on the ground. Silly guy refused to leave and at one point was sharing the chair headrest with my friend. He finally hit the road and I forgot all about him.
This afternoon I came out, opened the umbrella, sat down in the shade and decided to check out PP. About 30 min later, as I was watching the Peaches video, PLOP. Frog drops and ends up on the ground. He then proceeds to climb back up the pole to the chair next to me. He is now on the chair but under the cushion. So now I have to be on frog patrol and make sure no one comes out and sits on/squishes him. So silly.
I guess we have aquired a pet frog that lives in my pool umbrella. Why there I wonder??

Funny but you aren't the only one who has a gray tree frog hanging out in your patio umbrella. :th_biggrin:
Check out the comments of the post someone else mentions they have a frog umbrella guest too.
I wish I had a gray frog in the folds of my patio umbrella, there is a pile of wasps and yellow jackets that live in there. A froggy might like a tasty meal.

Mr P - Thank you so much! I had no idea what type of frog Mr Squishy was. It is interesting that they like umbrellas during the day. Now I understand why he hangs out there. My husband thought he might want to be my drinking partner when the chair next to me is empty. ;)
Sorry about the bee/wasps in your umbrella. That is the worst! We had some wasps on our umbrella over our outdoor table. Jef kept saying he was going to spray the hive, but he was saved by a storm. It was super rainy/windy and it got blown off. Although they then moved to above the garage doors. So Jef did eventually have to spray them, just in a different local. One of the annoying parts of summer weather.

Kendra just let Squishy play in the pool with you like ours do. Then you could rename him Splashy.

I said to hubby "Oh they're so cute Mommy and baby" Hubby said, "I don't think that's what's going on there" :th_LOL:

Do they really go in your pool? I do like the name Splashy and your frog is a cutie. He's greener and chubbier than Squishy. :)
I am now terrified that Squishy is going to end up drowning in my filter.

:th_hehe: Kendra Re: glasses
The one is kinda camouflaging into the other. Yes there is a small rock waterfall at the end of the pool and they are on the seat platform just chillin'. They swim over to the waterfall area when they can easily hop onto the rocks to get out. One year there were at least 10 in our pool one morning. Yes 2 years ago our filter was full of eggs Yikes! Check you filter/pump, it a perfect place to keep eggs safe. They are so loud too, screeching at night. And they scare me when I'm walking at night with a flashlight and they are all over the place. So hopefully you'll only have the one.
Aww..try not to squish Squishy! We get toads where we live, BIG ones. I've not seen them for a couple of years, though. I'm guessing because of the drought we are having. In wetter years, here, we did get frogs in our ponds, not anymore.

I always find it amazing here too when it rains with days there are hundreds of frogs in the neighborhood, nature is amazing. Hoping Cali gets some much needed rain.

My patio umbrella is where the yellow jackets and wasps go to live when it gets cold here at night and its been cold here at night lately. The dark folds are super warm when the umbrella is closed so its a perfect place for them to snooze safely.
Unfortunately they tend to gather in large numbers this time of the year because there are many grape sellers here in my neighborhood. People start buying grapes to make home made wine in mid August so the wasps bees and other creepy winged things are in mass here for the sweet grapes in stores and in grape selling depots all over.
In late september when I want to take the umbrella down and put it away for the winter it becomes an adventure for me.
I am armed with a couple of new cans of raid, I slowly open the umbrella and then spray up inside the umbrella in mad bursts with both cans then I make a mad rush running into the house. About 10 mins later I come out and start spinning the umbrella around and around in a circular motion so I can spray over the top of the thing killing the bugs that are hanging on for dear life on the top of the umbrella. Its a merry go round of raid and death for them!
Dying yellow jackets wasps and other creepy crawlies fall to the deck where more spray is applied. UNTIL THEY DIE DIE DIE!
Then I have to close the umbrella and cover it with a couple of large garbage bags and seal it up with tape.
Each spring when I open the garbage bags to set the umbrella up a couple of dead bodies of wasps or yellow jackets fall out of the bag onto the table. I am amazed they hid so well in the folds of the umbrella after I destroyed the ozone layer with 2 large cans of Raid poison trying to obliterate them all.
This year I just might set fire to my patio umbrella ella ella ella aye aye aye. :th_biggrin:

I like your new friend, Kendra. And I can almost understand Mr Squishy's logic: "Umbrella? Tree? Both towering structures provide me with shelter from the sun and both have about the same posture... so what's the difference?" :)

So I just came out and opened the umbrella keeping an eye out for good old Squishy. Lo and behold, there he was, sleeping on the inside umbrella spokes. I compromised and only opened it part way. Apparently this did not please him. After some hmmphing, he hopped onto a laurel and decided to actually hang out in a tree. ;)
Wha....hey, I was sleeping!

Well it poured rain here twice late yesterday afternoon and the frogs kept me up all night calling to each other. I went to the pool and there were no less than 7 frogs swimming around. I will post pics and a video so you can see how big and noisy they are Kendra. One of the froggies even swam right over to me and took a breath of air from swimming.
How is your froggie doing?

That is insane! I would love to see pics and videos. :)
We are on vacation in the OBX this week. So I haven't seen Mr Squishy. Hoping he is still happily living in my umbrella. :)
We did see these guys this morning:
