Holy Moly! Poor Wyatt is in first week and first year med school at UC Davis Medical School and had his first anatomy/ANATOMY class yesterday. He's been a vegan since 8th grade and is having a rough time with this cadaver stuff :th_eek: He says that after, I won't go into detail, too much..the instructor/Dr. comes over and shoves his hand into the opening, splattering "stuff" EVERYWHERE, all over the place, all over Wyatt and his colleagues arms and just grosses Wyatt out,,,it was a necessary lesson.

I'm proud of my kid, Wyatt, and he says he knows this is an important part of his education but wanted to puke! He got sent home with a "box of bones". I asked, " What?"

Poor Wyatt, I'm no vegan but I think I would of tossed my cookies! What's up with the box of bones? Guess it could of been worse, they could of sent him home with a jar of ...... E[Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wyatt's been determined since high school to follow the medical field. While he was in high school, his older sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, at 26'yrs. old., it affected him, deeply. Tim and I, mostly Tim, have always wondered where he got his smarts :).

Alice, the box of bones is..the human skeleton. The "for real" human skeleton. It's in a box. If you think appropriate, I can give detail. To me, this is fascinating, let me know when I should stop, ok?

We are more than so-so-proud of Wyatt. Out of 7,500 applicants to this med school only 109 were accepted.

Alright, no negative feedback. Are you all interested in a medical students journey? I can pass on to you what I interpret if you like. If not, that's ok too :)

Is the box of bones a 3D puzzle to be completed by next lecture?.
Oh and carry on, I will just cover my eyes when I get to the gruesome bits.

As a nurse I think this will be facinating.

Poor Wyatt, but this is only the beginning of his training and it will get much more gruesome and gross from here on in. In 2 years he will think back at this and think wow that was nothing compared to what I've seen now and what I will experience in the future.

Congrats at him for hanging in there and dealing with it.

As a nurse I would say forget it! To this day I remember having to cut up dead cats that were held in a barrel of formaldehyde. OMG it was and still is in my nightmares. I feel for your son and understand totally how he feels.

I understand your feelings, Dianne, unfortunately it's part of the learning process. This is why I could never go into the medical field..I do find it fascinating, though, from the outside looking in.

Jean-Pierre, I'll let you know soon what Wyatt's assignment is with the bones :)

Ok, I spoke with Wyatt this evening and his response to my question about the bones was..they are sent home with the students to REALLY study them, not to put together a puzzle, although, I bet they all do :) Wyatt says the rib bones are very light weight, reminds him of bird bones. One more thing..they are greasy feeling..

You know.. I got to thinking that you all might be wondering why I added "vegan" to the title of this post. Wyatt is SUPER vegan, no leather on clothing or shoes and I've eaten with him before when he grosses out at the chicken on my plate. Dang kid..let me be!

Week 5..Wyatt's med school training..

Weekend before this past one, Tim and I drove up to visit Wyatt in Sacramento, went out to dinner and spent the night. Even though we talk on the phone almost daily, it was so good to see him :). I slept on the sofa next to a bookcase which held this ominous looking black case. I asked Wyat what it was, it kind of looked like a large musical instrument case. It was his "box of bones"! I wanted so badly to ask to see them but was afraid he would think I was asking too much..these kids are taught to respect the human bodies and parts that they are given to learn on..so,,I didn't ask. After we got back home, I told him how badly I wanted to ask and he says I should have! It wouldn't have been any big deal! Soo..next time!

The students have finished dissecting and learning about the inner workings of the arm, hand and shoulder area. This past week they've been checking out the heart and lungs. Wyatt says it's getting a lot easier, I guess it would have to to continue doing this. He just called and is pretty excited about learning ultra-sound. They practice on each other, tomorrow will be the heart and chest cavity area.

I had to take an Anatomy and Physiology crammed into 5 weeks in the summer for the field I was trying to get into. I was the only one in the class that did not have any sort of background in the medical field like the one guy who was an EMT and taking a refresher course and so when the teacher started throwing all these funky words out there like epithelium and I was so lost and trying to take notes and could not pronounce the word let alone spell it.

That was THE worst class I ever took. No, maybe the micro economic one was. I went to that class twice and did not understand a thing of what he was talking about and when he assigned some homework I knew I was in over my head and learned I could still drop the class and take another needed course instead.

In the A&P class, when the time came to dissecting something or other I told my partner that 'I don't touch dead stuff' and he was more than happy to do the hands on while I just watched. I was not about to touch anything dead. The following fall class they were going to be using a human cadaver to practice on. I can look at gross pictures and be ok but I would never be able to become a dr or nurse or anyone who has to put hands on like that so my hat is off to everyone in the field that chooses that profession.

And Mare, to be one out of those 7,500 other applicants, you and your son can be proud of yourselves.

I'm glad there are those who have the stomach and brains for this kind of work or else a lot of us just might not be here today!

Thanks, Renee :). We are proud parents..just not sure what we did right..?..maybe loving and encouraging?..we did do that! Alice, I KNOW it takes a certain type of person to handle that kind of stuff, it sure isn't something I could do either!

Oaky Doaky..Wyatt is into second semester of med-school. The cadavers have had a good send off, cremation with a "thank you" card from the students that learned from them. Wyatt recommends NOT donating your body to science:th_scared4:

He is working in a free clinic in Sacramento, two days a month. First year students are the primary doctors, a REAL doctor backs them up. Wyatt did his FIRST pelvic exam on a "real, live" woman with a speculum and couldn't locate the cervix, the REAL Dr. came to the rescue and Wyatt now knows how to find a cervix. He was telling me, this morning, about this experience and I couldn't help myself from saying..you are now getting "down and dirty"! He wants to be an obstetrician so I guess you have to start somewhere!

The really disturbing aspect of it is that formaldehyde makes you hungry. I had friends who did med (I did chemistry - no dead things for me, thanks) who constantly complained of being hungry after their lab sessions in the morgue. Nothing wrong with donating your body to science. Of course, med classes are not the only place they end up.

I'm an organ donor on my driver's license but after the tales I've heard, I will not donate my whole body to science...nope, no way.

I wonder what's up with the formaldehyde?

First semester, second year of med school starting on Monday for Wyatt. I asked what his courses are this coming semester. It's the "brain block". First semester, last year, these kids had a cadaver and the brain has been saved for..now. Psychiatry, psycho pharm and more! :)

I'm betting so, Kendra! Wyatt's a trippy guy, he's following a doctor, OBGYN, that's his field focus, he has a woman that he meets in the waiting room for her every visit. They walk into the doctor's exam room together and Wyatt is on site for all of her appointments, all the way to delivery! I'm so excited for him! :). She and her husband don't want to know the sex of the baby..but Wyatt knows :)

A slide show Wyatt made. He came home a couple of weeks ago and grabbed a bunch of photo albums. I asked him why..?. No comment.

He sent this to me, it's something he made for one of his classes.

Mare, after watching your son's video, I kept thinking who your husband reminds me of , I played your clip again to be sure. He resembles Glen Campbell, Don't you think !

Mare
07-09-2016, 03:38 AM
Haha, no, Suzanne, Glen Campbell has never come to mind :). He's definitely a Jack Nicholson look alike. In his younger days he would be stopped in airports and such places, to be asked if he WAS this said character!

Wyatt is over half way of second year med school. He just finished up finals on liver and kidneys..on to intestines! I miss this kid, just got off the phone with him. He owns my heart :)

Wyatt is one of ten students in the "Rural Prime" program. It will add an extra year to his schooling but also add a much needed focal point to our world. In his third year, he will move to a rural city and work in the clinics and hospitals. This is when he starts more hands on education, working alongside the doctors.

I know what it is like to miss them, son is also gone for school and I miss him terribly.

Wyatt sounds like he is doing wonderfully. They need the education these days. Good for him.
