A couple of guys from Canada, scientists Frauke Zeller and David Harris Smith created the hitchiking and talking robot to start a discussion “about trust."
They placed a hitchBOT off at a road spot with a sign and off it went. Whoever picked up hitchBOT in their car/truck/van would document its travels.
CBC NEWS in Toronto says that last summer, hitchBOT made it all around Canada as it traveled from Halifax to Victoria BC and nothing bad happened to it. The hitchBOT had the time of its life!

In February of this year, they dropped the hitchBOT off in Germany and it made its way through most of the country and the Netherlands and again nothing bad happened to it!
Until on July 17th 2015 when the hitchBOT tried to travel across America, it started its journey in Boston. The creators were hoping it would make it all the way to San Francisco but it didn’t even make it halfway.
HitchBOT’s travel through the US came to a tragic end in Philadelphia on Saturday night when it was beat up and beheaded. Darn Americans! We just had ONE job and that was to take care of a Canadian robot friend and we couldn’t even do that!
HitchBOT was last seen by YouTuber Jesse Wellens who dropped it off at a street corner.
It was later found looking like this.
