Hi Nicky and welcome.
Just wanted to say hi. I don't have experience with the smaller guys, but I'm sure someone will come along soon.
Also, the fish tank isn't for your soon to be feathered friend, is it? :)

HI Nick. You are most welcome here. I am glad you are asking for advice before you get your bird. The very first thing you should do is to make inquiries to see if you have an vet near you that treats birds. A bird needs to see a vet at least once per year for a wellness check. Then check your home for unseen safety issues like an open fish tank they could drown in. Windows that are not covered or mirrors are a risk for the birds safety because until the bird becomes skilled at flying they can fly right into the glass and sustain a serious injury. Next be sure no one smokes anything in your home because birds are very sensitive to this. They are also sensitive to any kind of scent burning in the air such as candles and incense. You should remove all non stick cookware as this can be toxic at a certain heat. Other pets such as dogs or cats or even ferrets can kill a bird very fast. Our birds are as healthy as their diets so study what kind of foods they eat and do not eat! Some foods are also toxic like chocolate and avocado. Realize there are a great deal of expenses going along with keeping a bird happy and healthy. (toys, vet care, cage, food, filtration, lighting, cleaning supplies, a good vacuum cleaner)

Plan on waking up early in the morning as this is a birds most energetic time of the day. They are hungry and want to exercise. Birds need natural sunshine or full spectrum lighting. Sunshine through glass is not sufficient. A bird is also sensitive to several kinds of metal so learn what these are and have a safe cage for the birds home.

Did you realize that keeping a pet bird is not just a simple thing. As you can see by my writing it can be complicated. Birds love to chew so we need to provide them with safe chew toys. A sun conure can be very loud! Your family may object to the noise. An African Grey has several complex needs but is not as loud. Are you Prepared????

Where does one get a bird in India? Do you have clean pet stores or do you go to breeders to get a bird?

Hi Nick,

Welcome to the best Parrot forum on the net. It will be interesting to see which parrot you decide on. Is there a place you can visit that has some of the parrots your interested in, where you can see just exactly what they are like. There is so much to know, I hope you spend lots of time figuring out just which species will be happy in your care.

I was reading on Indian laws in bird keeping. I would suggest a love bird since the can be housed in cages there. They are very pretty and I would look for a male if you get but one bird. Also illegal trade in birds is flourishing in India so I would be very careful where you purchase a bird. If you see the Mom and Dad of the bird you should be OK.

That's a great size tank and lovely set up especially with the colorful neon tetra's in it. I bet it so calm to watch late at night with the lights on low, I find fish tanks so relaxing to watch but incredibly detailed to keep clean and healthy it looks like you do a great job with your tank and fish.

I love oscars they are really interesting fish, my brother use to have a massive sized oscar in a 100 gallon tank that was king of the aquarium. When I put my hand on top of the tank and waved it with the light shining above my hand the oscar would think it was a bird and go hide behind rocks and plants. :th_biggrin:

He was a beast when he hunted all the other little feeder fish in the tank so fast and cunning!

Thanks for sharing your photos.

I don't think I can afford a grey which is wat I wanted 😭 but iam thinking of something else I cant do sun conures 😞 as well as I live in a apartment so I might get complains from neighbour's as someone pointed that they can be loud I can't do Indian ringneck or Alexandria as they are banned by law to keep as pets in india 😒

Just to let you know any bird can be loud and annoying when it decides to make noise.

I live in a house and currently have one small budgie. HE IS A LOUD MOUTH SCHNOOK! :th_biggrin:

When I leave my house and walk down the street I can hear him screaming and calling for me when I'm 4 or more houses away. He is unbearable at times when he wants to be a loud mouth and he loves to scream at me which is a concern for other neighbors around me.

The birds that are least loud are the smaller birds like the tiny zebra finches and other finches that are so beautiful and colorful. Then there are a beautiful singing canaries, lovebirds and diamond doves.

Lovebirds are great birds that can learn to talk and are easy to hand tame, they are a very interesting little bird that have huge personalities. Lovies can be housed in a flight cage that is the same size you would buy to house a budgie so you won't be spending hundreds of dollars on the larger cages you need for a conure or larger bird.

The first video has cockatiels and lovies but the 2nd video is budgie wonderland.

I see this man is a colony breeder which is so difficult to do, if you get a couple of jealous mean budgie cock birds they are known to go into the nests next door and around them and kill the chicks and harm the other parent birds. The breeder has to have lots of food and spend lots of time monitoring the birds to keep them all safe.

I'm not much of a fan of colony breeding.

Prolly a mistake but I have heard people call budgies love birds before as budgies do often swap budgie spit and kisses so that's sort of love bird like. :th_biggrin:

Or Nick, Nicky, and Nikki. And we even had another Nick here recently... his user name is nicko9 I believe. What a popular name! :D

My name is actually Niklaus but teachers and people in my life always thought this too difficult to spell or remember so they just called me Nick adding a c.

I would have thought it easier to call me Nik.
