View Full Version : Five Amazing Years

Every year, people celebrate important dates. Birthdays, anniversary, and who knows what else. Today is one of those special dates for me. 5 years ago today, I brought home a beautiful blue budgie and became a bird mom.

The memory of that day is one that I remember so clearly. I remember silly little random details, like what we did before we went to the pet store, and me being so worried that we weren't going to make it before they closed. I remember getting home with my new budgie. My mom grabbed her out of the box, and I pet her head for the first time before putting her in her cage. My family helped me choose a name off of my list, and we ended up going with Weasley. I sat and talked to that little bird until I put her to bed. I was so happy that day.

Weasley passed away in 2013, but in those two and a half years she was with me, she showed me so much love, and taught me so much. Without her, and all of my other birds, I wouldn't be who I am today. They have helped shape the last five years of my character. They helped me become responsible, more loving and caring, and even to become an artist. With good, also comes a bit of bad. They've helped me become a neurotic freak. All pots and pans have to be checked, everything must be unplugged before we leave the house so that there is not chance of them being harmed, and I'll panic if someone comes in the house wearing perfume or essential oils. Being a bird owner also means that I will give unwanted advice to anyone else who owns birds. Trust me, I didn't WANT to tell my youth group leader's wife that her daughter letting her dog and African Grey kiss is extremely dangerous, but I HAD to. :th_biggrin:

The past five years of my life have been amazing, and I hope they will continue to be. So many happy memories have been made, and I know that there are plenty more to be made.

Thank you, Weasley, for starting it all. You were such a special girl.

Happy Anniversary to you and Weasley for the incredible bond you two had and her leading you into the bird crazed lover you are today. The world needs more bird lovers like you who know how and what to do to care for their birds. I'm glad to have met you elsewhere and on this board again so I can enjoy your many posts of your birds and incredible art work.

Didn't I create a cute Xmas hat avatar of your Weasley last year? :th_biggrin:

How wonderful to have these memories and to share them with us makes me feel warm and feathery. :th_anniversary:
I have no doubt that your future will be full of more fun loving memories with your flock.

Your tribute is incredibly touching and well expressed, Maddy. It's amazing how these feathered kids of ours are able to grasp our hearts so firmly and permanently. I remember reading about Weasley in some of your other posts and I've never forgotten the wonderful part of your life that she became. I agree with you wholeheartedly that these feathery, loving and dynamic little beings can have an enormous influence on the total character of their human caregivers. And I can easily relate to the resistance you've mentioned that can result from giving unwanted safety advice to pet owners, and certainly to the discomfort (and sometimes the resentment toward the bearer) that stems from doing so :(

Thank you for posting this! It's a very special thing that your passion for and dedication to companion birds all began with little Weasley :th_Budgie:

I would love to share some pictures of my Weasley with you guys!

For most of Weasley's life, I had a very bad camera. So most of the pictures I have of her are fuzzy. Thankfully, I got a nice camera a few months before she passed, so I do have a few nice pictures of her. However, I treasure all the pictures I have of her, even the fuzzy ones. <3

The other budgies in the pictures are her husbird, Jacob (green), and Bellatrix (yellow/green/black) and Hermione (yellow), her two best friends.

She was so beautiful! I especially like the couple of pics that showed her fluffy poofy cheeks flowing over her beak.

Great pics Maddy, thanks for sharing.
