Thank you Blake!:th_dance4:
Is she as large as a blue and gold macaw? She is beautiful, just curious about size.

Thanks Mare. :) No, she is the smallest of the large macaws. They generally run between 450-550 gms{Holly is light at around 430}{ETA: my mistake, she is actually 475 gms} They are about 24" in length, and have a wingspan of about 34-36". They have slender toes and sharp nails.
Compare that to a B&G that averages 900-1100 gms, about 34-36" long, with a wingspan of about 41-45". You've seen B&G feet I am sure, they are much larger.

Ok I am sitting here giggling because both Merlin and Pete weigh more than Holly and I didn't expect that. I admit Merlin is a rather hefty female CAG and Pete is a big zon, but I guess I thought all the large macaws were bigger than them.

I am sorry, my old brain is not working. That must have been a baby weight. I looked back in my notes and last September she was 475 gms.:th_hehe:

They are clipped though, right?
Flighted birds are always going to be a tad lighter, and then of course even within each species there are variations. The last several years I have noticed some birds are getting smaller, especially macaws & parrotlets.

No, they aren't clipped, lol! They are just piggies!
Yellow Crowns just seem to be large amazons. Pete looks like a moose compared to my vet's 2 Blue Fronts and other zons I've seen.
And Merlin is just a big girl! She doesn't actually have a weight problem.

Holly is sooo photogenic! She is a gorgeous girl & her poses are awesome. She seems to love the camera or maybe I should say the camera loves her.

Yes, that's the problem, lol! Macaws are actually my favorite birds and usually the ones who choose me. I could end up bringing one home...

Thank you Crystal!:) Audrey, it doesn't hurt just to look!:devilish:
If I could, I would have a blue and gold, right now! The size of your RF makes better sense, do you know if most species of macaw share the same temperament ?

No, they don't, Mare. The smaller macaws actually are in general more hyper and nippy and territorial (a lot like conures, actually, lol!) And there are differences between the species of larger ones, too. Carole would be able to tell you more about RFs than I ever could though. Back when I was researching macaws I don't believe I read much, if anything about them.

Well red fronts play a more playful, nippy macaw in my experiences with them and need to be taught gentle and so on like any macaw. Red fronts are still considered a large macaw sooo not yet stooping into the mini category. Most minis are more high energy yes but need to be worked with similar to large macaws. They may be mini to us but not to them they arnt so small.
Holly is beautiful I love red fronts:)

Holly was only "pinchy" is what I called it, when she was about 2. She soon learned how to wrestle and play, but not bite hard. But it's a sassy way she has, not one with malice. With some stubborn and mischief thrown in for good measure. She really is a wonderful bird. I love her to pieces.
What a beautiful RFM Holly is! She sure likes to pose :)
