Hi guys! Just wanted to get some opinions on keeping my birds warm in winter. I live in Queensland, Australia so our winter (if you could even call it that) is not overly cold. Usually around 9 degrees Celsius at night. I have two rainbow lorikeets who are outside birds and I'm wondering whether I should be doing anything different in the winter to keep them comfortable. I know wild lorikeets obviously fair well during winter nights, but I'm being the over worrying mother. In past years I used to bring them in every single night (no matter the season) so this will be their first winter outside. I have been putting a blanket over their cage at night since the temperature dropped in the past couple of weeks. Do you think this will be enough? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks in advance!

We worried when Casper first came to live with us about him getting cold at night. I don't think nine degrees is going to be a problem, we are lucky to have that during the day except in the summer week. I even went as far as getting a digital thermometer and putting it in the cage when covered with a blanket and it was quite toasty in there. Feathers are incredible insulators - feel how warm you get when your bird cuddles up to your neck.
Wind Chill
Something to watch out for with open enclosures, but shouldn't be a problem under a blanket.
