Apparently Carolina can talk as I was doing dishes I heard somebirdie saying pretty bird. And I can promise you it wasnt Riley as he has shown zero interest in talking plus I've never used that phrase around any of my birds.

Let's see the things I have learned about Carolina in the almost 3 days I've had him. He talks, has issues with hands meaning I have to cover my hand to get him to initially step up after that he will step up on my finger. He's not cage aggressive just has that issue with hands once I cover my hand with my sleeve he can't wait to step up and come out. He's an excellent flyer, he's gentle on his toys, he's an adventurous eater. Let's not forget he talks. Do you know what his previous owner could tell me after having him for 6 months? We sometimes call him yellow but he doesn't really have a name and he's protective of his cage (meaning cage aggressive). That is all they could tell me about him.

Well he bit me today directly on the knuckle. Not fun. What happened was he took flight and landed on a tight spot. So I offered my covered arm to him he stepped up and I saw a string attached to his foot and I ignored his hand aversion to detach the string and yes he bit. I am fully aware I was the one at fault but it hurts bad. I think there is a bruise forming which will be fun to explain to the several people who ask because I have to show my right hand to every guest who checks into the hotel tomorrow when I show them what information we need.

Well hopefully they will understand why it was important to take the risk of getting bit.

I expect a lot of "what did you do" and when I say I did nothing that's when I get the looks like I am crazy or something.

Maybe they will ask, "what happen to your hand" and you can tell them a little birdie bit me as I helped him get loose from some string :D.

Carolina decided to somehow injure his wing yesterday. He has a vet appointment tomorrow. I don't think it's broken possibly sprained or something. I couldn't get him in to the vet today because he did it right before I went to work yesterday at 3pm and got off at 7am only to come back at 3pm again so he is going tomorrow morning

So good news not broken soft tissue injury only possibly torn muscle but nothings broken which is good. Carolina is hospital cage bound for the next 2 weeks and had his band removed and if I am correct he's 17. The vet gave me his band after removing it sideways it had printed ncs (assuming it means national cockatiel society) and above that also sideways was 98 so I assume that means he hatched in 1998.

Sorry he bit you and hurt his wing. If he bites again some application of ice for about 20 min. may help with the pain. :im so sorry:

It is good to hear Carolina did not injure himself to badly, altho a pulled muscle is not much fun at least nothing is broke and healing time will not be as long.

So just got a confirmation from the ncs otherwise known as the national cockatiel society and Carolina is infact one of there's and he is 17 years old.

Well I got a huge surprise from Carolina today. It has been well known since bringing him home that he HATES hands. I have not help much by literally having to knock him off his water dish (I tap it from the bottom to avoid getting bit) in order to change it and out side of stepping up when he has landed on the floor he bites hard on the knuckle often times drawing blood. Today however I was feeding the birds pellet berries and he wouldn't get out of the way for me to put it in his food dish. So I held one between my thumb and finger both clearly in his sight and he started eating one of the pellet berries from my hand.

Time for a little update on Carolina he is a grumpy old bird who likes to attack my hands he will only accept certain treats when and if he feels like it but he has bonded very well with Riley. Riley not so much. Riley will likely always be a people bird but Carolina will continuously call for Riley when he can't see him Riley will NOT answer so Carolina ends up pacing in the cage. Well today Riley flew to me in the kitchen and Carolina refused to come out of the cage so instead he kept calling and Riley kept not answering. When I finally got Carolina out of the cage put him on the play stand and he started singing to Riley here are some pics. And the stuff on the play stand is just seeds I sprinkled for them this morning.

Oh you are so right. I went back to the beginning of the thread and took another look. He is quite the handsome guy!

Robyn

He is gorgeous and if he wasn't so old (going on 18) I would seriously consider breeding him as he has gorgeous coloring and is pretty much the perfect cockatiel physically.

So I think at one point in his life (probably his first owners) fed him Harrisons. As we all know birds will avoid new foods so I didn't expect much when I put the Harrisons lifetime mash in one of the food dishes. Since it doesn't say how to prepare it I just put it in the dish the way it is. Well Carolina has been eating it with no hesitation which makes me hopeful Riley will pick up on it and also have no issue eating it

Carolina for the first time since I have had him has played with a toy. I don't mean his normal using his beak to explore things but he actually spent a good 20 minutes destroying the bird kabob. It's a small victory but a victory none the less. I know that his first owners have taken really good care of him as there are some things he does that gives insight to his past (stepping up after landing in an unfavorable spot without biting at all, he will try "new" foods more willingly than Riley). But between the pet store and his last owner that care obviously went downhill and reverted a lot of his more tame behaviors. Which is why I don't let him on my shoulder because I can't trust him not to bite. But he has started following Riley to me when I approach the cage to give Riley scratches through the cage bars (he still hisses and tries to bite when I try to give him scratches but we are making progress)
