My daughter convinced me to be gluten free in diet. I went shopping today and find this type of food difficult to find so I must go to the more expensive stores like Wegmans and Whole Foods. Gave away all my crackers and foods with wheat.
Boy you really must read labels. Any other members here GF?
This is the reason for no more wheat: [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]
My aunt and friend are both totally gluten free. My sister and mom also went gf, briefly. Trying to find snacks is very difficult, but if you eat all fresh food ie. meat, fruit, veg, you should be fine. There is a gf bakery near me and they make pretty good bread, but it doesn't last very long.

Cdog I agree with fresh food, but meat is possibly the worst substance to ever put into your body, I suggest the documentary "forks over knives". I am not gluten free, but really I barely eat bread as it is empty calories and my snacks/ meals are usually all fruits/ veggies so that is gluten free. I believe I was reading it may not be the gluten that is bothering us as much as the modifications to the food. I think eating a whole food fresh mainly raw, vegan diet is probably the best way to increase longevity, reverse disease and really help animals/ planet both!:)
As far as that book is concerned any bread/ baked goods are really empty calories with little to no nutritional benefits and eating said products, usually ends up with eating other food because you gained little to nothing from the bread and your body is looking for something more nourishing and dense. At least this is how it was explained to me, as well Bruce Lee swore against almost any and all baked goods/ bread.

Thanks both of you. I am still reading as it is a bit confusing to me. What is that video about JT?

The video mentioned is a documentary focusing on research of a few doctors one of which help pioneer bypass surgery. The research is based off how Americas diet has changed over the years and how bad it really has gotten. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer these are all things we can prevent based of food choices. It takes a few subjects and shows how a whole foods plant based diet reversed diabetes and heart disease and even cancer in patients. It is full of facts and honestly one of the best movies I have ever watched. If you get the chance to watch it I would really suggest it! They also have a website, I watched the video after the transition to veganism, but was told to watch it before. I watched it and could not believe some of the stuff the food we consume really has done to us. It pretty much made me aware that I have no need to ever change my lifestyle choice of being plant based. I could talk about it for hours, but I will just say watch it!;)
Haha, I'm a meat eater, sorry. I know many people don't approve of eating meat, but there is no way I'm giving it up. And yes, I'm aware of what they put into store bought meat.

It is defiantly your choice! At least you are educated on the fact it isn't really good for you. My grandfather is a butcher, i grew up in a different type of family, but I still gave up the meat haha.

I am gluten intolerant (as well as being just generally intolerant), it took years to find out what the problem was, having all sorts of hospital tests. Then one day I happened to pick up a copy of Readers Digest which had an article by a lady and as I read it I was realising that every problem she had, I also had. So Margaret and I discussed it and decided to try me on gluten free foods. Within a fortnight I was no longer suffering. Went to doctor to explain the situation and was told that in order to test to see if I was Coeliac I would have to go back onto gluten for three months before they did the tests. :(
So we went through all that and they decided I wasn't Coeliac so at least I know.
Finding decent bread was a big problem, now Margaret bakes our own and we also get supplies of part baked bread when we go to France (where the bread is much better than the steam baked mush the English call bread).
I did wonder if the problem of gluten intolerance was caused by all the chemicals they put in bread nowadays but apparently the four thousand year old body of a man they pulled out of a glacier in the Alps, when they did an autopsy, had signs of coeliac disease in the gut so who knows.

Modern day wheat (as I read) is very difficult to digest for humans. It is highly processed now vs. in the past. Many people, including youngsters, have what is termed wheat belly. My 3rd day now with no wheat and there is already a difference. Found a brand of bread to eat. I must say nothing is as good for a loaf of bread as wheat gluten. I miss that. Yesterday I was in a store called Whole Foods and walked through the bakery department. I am so used to getting something yummy there it was very difficult to just walk through.

I totally agree this is a healthy diet - not a fad. Wheat now days is genetically altered as are other grains which contributes greatly to intolerances and obesity (wheat belly). Effects of modern day wheat on our bodies include: exaggerated blood sugars, inflammatory effects that erode cartilage and damage bone, disordered immune responses, neurologic disorders and many more.
There have been dramatic turnaround results from some of these effects documented with withdrawal of wheat gluten from the diet.
Wake up and smell the roses and do your research. I did. Results pending.
I've noticed that the local markets, Raley's, Vons, are carrying way more GF products than I've ever seen before! I've tried some (accidentally) and found the flavor not as good. I have to agree with the fresh, whole foods movement.

I will get off my soap box for now. I wonder how this altered grain status effects our birds in the long run.

Altered food no matter what is nothing but negative it seems:/.. wheat is currently the thing we are seeing a ton of controversy over.. for just reasons of course!

JT I watched the Forks over Knives video last night and I can honestly say I fell asleep. However, the research done is impressive. The results of the doc's research will change lives for the positive. We would be so much better off if people would cook their food instead of buying ready made which means highly processed. Of course people are doing too many things at once and working too many hours to cook their meals from scratch. I am going to cook Mare's muffins today after getting the ingredients.
I started a thread about this on "that other forum" and received many negative comments so I want to thank the members here on PP for not doing that.
Now I am wondering what effects the genetically altered food will have on our birds. Does anyone know if these foods are being mixed into bird food? This may be another subject for another thread, not sure. Think I will start one.

Yeah you gotta kinda be behind the vegan/ plant based lifestyle to really get into it:p.
