I thought this might be a good question for a thread topic. Each of us has our own set of reasons as to why we're drawn toward parrots and why we may have chosen to share our homes with one or more of them. What are your reasons? I'll present some of mine below.

Personally, I've had no better friends in life than my 4 macaws. They're playful, intelligent, perceptive, inquisitive, comical, mischievous, affectionate, loyal, and extraordinarily loving. These guys are my dedicated companions! Adding to the mix that they're magnificently pleasing to my eyes and that they possess an uncanny ability to interact with me on a near-human level, I can't imagine a more suitable group of personal friends to have around. They give so much more than they take... and in so many ways!!

And then there's the magic. That magic is something I have long sensed during my encounters with psittacine birds throughout life. I remember feeling it when I was merely a few years old. It's something inexplicable that emanates from them. For me, it's simply mesmerizing. While all pets are great, no other animal has captivated me in life as parrots have done. I wouldn't be without them! Companion parrots will be an important part of my life for as long as I exist :)

What about each of you?

What a fantastic posting. I will sum up my love for birds in a few words "They give me a reason to get out of bed in the morning".

Plax you pretty much summed up my reason as well. I can agree with said Magic and associate. I believe it is simply because birds are known to see into the fourth spectrum allowing them to see your heat indexes and such. This also allows them to be more in contact with your soul and possibly create a stronger bond then any other animal can. This bond formed because they can see deep inside you and know your feelings and respond according allowing them to act in a very intellectual, thoughtful manner that many other animals don't seem to respond in(in certain situations).

I personally felt a huge connection with parrots starting young as well and it only grew as I grew older. I gained understanding about them and in return they gained understanding about me. The bond/ experiences I have had with these animals is life changing, they have saved me from so much of myself that I couldn't have found out without them. They really taught me love, compassion, empathy, socialization, and what a true bond and friendship is. In return I have only sacrificed so little to have this experience yet they return it with so much more then I could think of doing.

I cannot think of a better animal to form a bond with as long as you have dedication and the will power to do so!

Oh those are some wonderful reasons.

For me companion birds are awesome because they are most unique, after all they are not domesticated. But yet here they are learning to adapt to life within our homes. Many traits that dogs and cats, as well as other "pets" have, they share. As some have experienced, how excited they can get when their favorite person walks into the room. How they want to be cuddled, scratched and loved. How they want to be part of the family. And do what they can to communicate with us.

I love their soft colorful feathers and that they can fly. I love that they live in the moment but also have wonderful memories. I love the little content noises she makes when she is playing on her own and when she is tucked in for the night. Or talking under her breath.

To repeat some of what Tony said, Lady is playful, intelligent, perceptive, inquisitive, comical, and becoming more affectionate and loving every day. I find that no day is the same as another as we spend time together and she teaches me what she feels I need to learn about her. I hope I have taught her that I will always love her, I show her that she can trust that I will be patient and kind as we go through life together.

I love everyone's reasons and can relate to all of them, especially yours, Dianne :). I had never really thought of diving into the companion bird world, not until Amigo landed on us and then, we all thought we were going to drown! :th_eek: Once we settled in, I wouldn't go back to the way we were before, for ANYTHING! I love my birds for all the reasons above and more. Their bravery stands out, to me. They aren't domesticated animals and yet, do the best they can to survive in a world they weren't meant for. The lucky ones have good lives.
