Is it harmful to not use a liner like newspaper in bottom of the cage? Can you just leave the plastic bottom tray by itself? Do they sell any type of liner material to use that is best.?

I use black and white newspaper more than anything else because it is mostly free. I have also used waxed paper as well as regular white computer paper when I got it on sale.

Each morning I put down 2 layers of newspaper and one layer of paper towels. As the day goes by the layers come off. Then I still have a clean layer for night.

Newspapers for the large flight cage, telephone book pages for the smaller cages. I was walking downtown one afternoon and a guy was coming out of a company with large rolled tubes of paper he was throwing in a recycle bin. I asked him what type of paper was in there and he said it was drafts of blue prints on recycled white paper the bp's were 4 feet long 4 feet wide. I asked him if I could have the tubes and he said help yourself.

I quickly got home got the car and came back collecting 100's of tubes that held 50 pages or more inside each tube. I had a lot of paper that fit perfectly in the larger flight cage as liner for years to come, it was great because it was clean and white on one side which I had face up so I could always see the birds poops clearly and know if one was ill.

Its sometimes hard to see the color and consistency of your birds droppings on newspaper.

We use newspaper and Rosie's cage has the grate about 3 inches above to prevent her from playing with the paper.

You can get rolls of unprinted newspaper online.
