Casper's 2nd best friend

Casper once had a single bright yellow feather in the middle of the green ones. It moulted out and was replaced by a regular green one.
I wondered whether this is something that happens often and what causes it.
Stuff wot I lernt:
Yellow feathers contain pigment to give them their colour whereas the green and blue ones look green because of the way they reflect the light. I found that out when trying to find out why the green and blue feathers look grey when they are wet while the yellow ones stay bright.
So why did this random feather get a shot of pigment in the ordering/production/supply pipeline?
