Hello everybody, I haven't posted here in awhile, so I thought I'd come by and say HI!

We are all doing good! I have exciting news, I have a new flock member!

I had not been planing on adding another bird to my flock until I had my own house. For many years, I have been a godparront to my mom's ex coworker's African Grey. She wanted me to take him if anything happened to her, or if she couldn't take care of him anymore. I did not think I would be asked to take him for many years, however, earlier this month, she contacted my mom and asked if I would be willing to take the bird now. She was no longer giving him the care he used to have, and thought it would be best to give him to me. Although I was not planing on adding to my flock, I made an exception for this bird.

The bird is a 20 year old African Grey named Grey Bird. He had lived with his owner since he was a baby on four hand feedings a day. His owner used to take him out and hold him, up until a few years ago when an accident happened, and he became cage bound, and has been cage bound ever since. I picked him up last Sunday, and he is a sweetie. The first night he got here he asked me for scritches, and I had only known him for a few hours at that point, so I only gave him one tiny scritch. But yesterday, he let me give him a full on head massage. LOL.

He has been settling in very nicely. He is an AMAZING talker, and makes amazing sounds.

Yesterday I left his cage door open to give him the option of coming out if he wanted. I didn't think he would want to, but to my surprise, he climb out on his door! He did this a few times, and I thought that was amazing progress for a cage bound bird. However, he decided to surprise me even more, by TOTALLY COMING OUT and sitting on the top of his cage! He sat up there for a few hours, and he looked so happy. He talked and preened. I was so thrilled. He went nicely back in his cage when I put his favorite treat in his treat dish.

So far, so good! He is making fast progress, all on his own pace! I'm making sure not to rush him, I want him to be comfortable with what he is doing.

We will work on re training him to step up in a little while. When he is ready.

Jester does not like Grey Bird at all. He can hear him, and it makes him very angry. Poor boy, I'm still giving him the same amount of attention, or at least I'm trying to, but he declines it. :( I'll work him and try and teach him that Grey Bird is nothing to be jealous of, I love Jester just as much as I did before GB came.

The others can hear him too, and they don't mind. Thankfully!

Hi Maddy
That's a bit of a strange story, I guess you are not willing to tell us why he was given a prison sentence. I am so glad that you are letting him out of his cage now. It will probably take a while to get him back into good physical fitness and hopefully the mental scars will heal as well with love and care.
Jester will hopefully make friends. It would be great if they can be buddies.
As you probably already know, if you need any advice, there are some very knowledgeable people on here who will give good information. I am new to parrot guardianship so the help I can give will be limited to what Casper has taught me over the last three years. Which is mainly about how to give a single parrot a good time.

Congratulations to you and Grey Bird, Maddy! It sounds like your love, care and environment were just what he needed. Please post some pics of him when you're able. Poor jealous Jester :(. Hopefully he'll come to be more accepting of GB fairly soon.

Hi Maddy,

:th_congrats3: on GB! Reading about Jester sounded like sibling rivalry. I hope that in time with the love and attention you are giving to them all, things will work out. Can't wait to see pics and hear more stories on his progress.

Hi, Maddy! Congrats on the newest..Grey Bird! Don't be surprised if Jester never comes around to the idea of sharing you with another bird. Amigo hates ALL other birds in our home but...he came from a home with an African Grey, that he was great friends with. There is hope :)
