Ok so I'm gone a lot with this new job. Not happy with that fact but ya know we need money for bird food and toys lol. I guess I could pay some bills too. Anyway I was looking once again to get a friend for Mina my U2. She will be three and thinking of getting it before the hormones really set in. I'm thinking pinous vs conure. I have heard conflicting debates on both. I would like her companion to be subdued like her but at times outgoing. Not crazy all the time that will scare her. Talking isn't important but Mina isn't a yeller and I'd rather not have her companion get that bad habit started. I DO realize that all parrots come different and no matter what need work and love. Just wanting to know what you all think since many of you have large flocks.

I think, in my limited experience, that some parrots take on some of the traits of their guardians. This of course may be utter tosh.

I would be very careful about bringing in another species of bird. How long have you had Mina? I also ask why not another too? That would be the safest bet for her.

Both of those picks would require you to keep them in different areas away from Mina, unless providing proper filtration. The feather Dander Mina produces can easily hurt those two species of birds in the long term possibly short term. The other obvious problem is the large size difference. I am not sure about your too, but I know mine and the ones at the rescue are escape artist they could literally match Houdini. I know it sounds like an nonviable option but Mina could break out and possibly hurt such smaller birds. Although your decision is based on what you feel you can do safely and with the time you have. I must say pionus require much less attention then conures in my experiences with them. Pionus are often very quiet, sometimes reserved birds some of my favorite birds they are so laid back!

I agree that the issues Dianne and Justin have raised are extremely important to consider. That said, many years ago my mother had a White-capped Pionus. That bird was the sweetest little thing imaginable! She was beyond gentle and loved everyone. But again, the Too dander and the risk of catastrophe from physical contact between Mina and her potential new friend are factors to seriously think about.

My solution to have no worries about escape artists is pad locks. Riley doesn't fuss with her doors but she still has 8 padlocks on her cage. She has 6 feeder doors and 2 regular doors all of which have a padlock. My dog on the other hand has 2 padlocks on each door he knows how and get out his crate both the plastic and metal ones. When he only had one lock on each door he managed to bend the door. So his are double locked a d I'm about to add a third lock to each door.

I have had birds open padlocks believe it or not. These big toos and macaws are power tools not to be messed with!

Thank you all so much for your input. Mina has her own air filter in her room. But I do realize It could still cause health problems. She has not yet figured out how to get out of her cage BUT your all right she may and I could never risk her harming another. At three years old next month I think I may just end up having her be an only bird. I was looking for a bird that could be ok with a little more independence. Another Too not sure I could handle that lol. I spend lots of time with her so I guess she will be ok as an only bird. I just wanted to rescue another an give it a forever home. Guess I will just keep sending them toys and food at the rescue.
