I must've introduced myself somewhere else in the forum.. I'm guessing 'wrong turn' Lol!! So, after having it brought to my attention, I thought I'd say Hi again & tell a little more about myself :).. I'm not new to the bird world, per say, but new with my eyes open, if that makes sense. I had a couple of pet birds growing up, a budgie and a tiel later on, then I've had a Quaker prior to the one we have now. I wasn't as educated in parrot diets as I am now, plus the Internet is a wonderful tool for learning all of this useful info, in which I had no access to in the past. Plus the breeder in which we got our baby was So helpful with recipes, websites, etc.. I feel good about where we are now with our knowledge ( diet-wise) & I'm looking forward to learning Lots more from everyone here on this site. Since we've gotten Kiwi, and have been working with him, he was pretty much talking in our site after the first week at 2 1/2-3 months, his vocabulary is remarkable.. Each day he is saying new things. I spend a good bit of time with him every day. His cage is in the main living room of our house where everyone congregates. He's getting better with hands. Initially he really seemed to fear them. He would Love to climb right down the side of his cage & get in the middle of my husband or daughter playing toys with our dog.. But, for his protection, I'm always there to keep him safe.
My other interests include a multitude of things from wild bird watching, cooking, homeschooling, crafts, drawing/sketching/some zentangle, reading, exercise, holistic remedies, bible prophesy study, learning other languages, pyrography. I'm sure I've left something out... Haha... Anyways, it's Great to be here, and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone. :)

Hello and welcome!
We would love to see pictures of Kiwi. You are right about it being so much easier to learn about looking after a parrot nowadays, I was talking to a lady who had an African Grey for many years, initially about fifty years ago, and she said that in those days she had to telephone London Zoo for advice such was the lack of available information.

Welcome to PP, Wvbirdlover!

Thanks so much for the nice introduction :). It sounds like you've made good progress with Kiwi. That's great to hear :).

One word of caution... I'm unsure what type of dog you have, but please don't give Kiwi physical access to him/her. Any dog may accidentally (or in some cases, intentionally) injure or kill a pet bird sharing its space. A human caregiver being there to supervise really presents a false sense of security, since animal attacks can occur so quickly. A pet bird will on occasion become startled and thus may take flight aimlessly or leap to the floor (if clipped) abruptly landing on or near a dog or cat that's in the same room. Such an event can easily surprise the dog or cat which may trigger a snap or a swat at the bird. Those snaps and swats have been known to seriously injure or kill pet birds. It's indeed something to take seriously.

We hope to learn more about your life with Kiwi. Thanks for joining us :D

How refreshing to have a new member who is having fun and knowledgeable about bird diets. What do you feed Kiwi? I have trouble getting dandelion greens. Must drive a long way. Nice you are an artist. I love making signatures and perhaps you would too. I use Photoshop Elements and some other apps. Signatures are pictures of our birds we place at the bottom of where we write. You can see I have a Linnie and English Budgie.

Hello Wvbirdlover~:pp_welcome:

This is a wonderful forum for new bird owners as well as veterans. It's nice to meet you. A Quaker huh, how cool. They look like fun little birds. Kiwi is a cute name and seems to fit their color nicely. You must of loved your first one so much that you chose the same species. I hope you have many things to share and look forward to trying some of those recipes, it's not so easy to make food look interesting to a bird.

I do have to agree with Tony about the real possibilities of an accident around other pets. I just have to think how horrified I would be if anything happened to my Lady because of my cats. I find it easier to keep them out of the room when she is out or I am not around.

Posting pics isn't difficult to do and we'd sure love to see them :).
