I ordered Rosie a bunch of different nuts from nuts.com yesterday. I put pili nuts in my cart thinking they were pine nuts. I came across the pine nuts, added them and forgot to remove the pili nuts. Her big box of nuts arrived today and the pili nuts were included.

My question is, are pili nuts ok to give to her? I am not familiar with them and a quick google search didn't give me the info I was looking for.

Kendra: Before you posted about them, I knew nothing about Pili Nuts. I've just done some brief research on them and it appears they are a high fat nut from the Philippines... being high in fat means that they're probably okay for Macaws, but perhaps not the best choice for various other species. At any rate, I would offer them sparingly. I did find a couple of posts in which people have stated they are feeding Pili Nuts to their parrots and putting them in bird bread. But there doesn't seem to be an abundance of information out there concerning folks feeding them to pet birds. It might be a good idea to give your avian vet's office a call to get a qualified expert opinion. My guess is that Pili Nuts should be fine as long as they're offered in moderation.

Oh I never heard of these nuts either. But some quick research shows that people do eat them and make some interesting things with them as well. Going to give them a taste test for us Kendra?

Are they in a shell? I guess a Macaw could open just about any nut. If it were me and there is so little information on the net about this nuts being eaten by birds I would be cautious. They are not on the list from nuts.com as a bird nut.

Thanks everyone.

They are not in the shell. But yes, she has been able to crack all the nuts I have given her. Her favorite are pine nuts in the shell (they call them birdy crack at BP).

I start my diet on Tuesday, and nuts are plan approved. So I may give them a try then. :)

Rosie has her well visit on Monday so I will hold off and check with her vet first.

Interestingly the vet had never heard of these nuts. So I will do some more research before I offer them.

Hi Kendra,
Just curious if Rosie tried the pili nut as of yet and if so did she like them?

Oh okay, what about you? Are you brave enough to try them? From the reviews I've read they sound delicious :D.

Not yet. I have been helping her eat her cashews and pistachios. :)
