Thought I would begin this thread to vent (in a nice way) your thoughts of what you do not like seeing in the world of exotic birds.

For me, I do not like seeing that many birds (mostly the larger ones) must live their lives in a sheltered environment. Its enough that they have suffered mistreatment by humans. Then again, where would they be living otherwise? Bird flippers/hoarders are also on my no no list. I dislike that birds are sold in pet stores where the customer will not receive much care education and follow up to see how they are doing once the bird is at home. Having been stationed at a Petco store I do have first hand knowledge that the care these birds receive depends on the manager and bird care person in that particular store.

I agree with all your points. Here locally there is a pet store that has a greenwing macaw for sale,on display for over three years. Not much of a life living in a mall.Priced high for profit....doesn't seem to matter when.My heart breaks when I see birds, cats dogs living their lives in the public spotlight. To me this time of year seems all the more tragic as animals shouldn't be a surprise gift...that's what sweaters are for.A life is not to be taken lightly...it's a lot of responsibility.

Ohhh, pet stores are the worse place for birds to be :(. Poor babies.. It bothers me tremendously when I see them in a too small cage with one perch and one toy. Brings out the mama bear in me, grrrr..

Just remember you can't save them all. Otherwise you get yourself into a terrible mess. There are unfortunately items in the press now and then about sanctuary owners who run out of money or health and it ends in tragedy. I have not heard of this in the bird world but I suppose it must happen. Horses and dogs seem to be the main victims.

No, you can't save them all, unfortunately :(. Sometimes I feel like I'm running a rescue, what with the stray dogs and cats our kids drop on us. Amigo was a dropped upon me, too. I must admit, though, there have been many happy endings with my rescues :)

When I was at Petco we actually had 2 birds, a senegal an a blue crowned conure, that was there for over 2 years. That is all they knew. It did have a good outcome for both birds because a man came in the store who had tones of bird experience and he took both of them because of the life they had known. He stayed in touch with us and said they were learning to be a home body.

This is why I strive to take my birds and the rescue's birds out to places, teach them things and show them they are not humans or toys that they are simply a bird. Yes they can preform tasks I ask them to, but they are an independent living thing. Sadly most pet stores and or owners fail to do this. Socialization is key for these guys they are social masterminds. I learnt long ago saving them all will never happen, but I opened rescue doors to save as many of them as I dang well can. I also know my limits and adopt out fairly quickly to people I know and have been evaluated for a period of time to be good homes. I spend as much time as I need to educating a potential home and or common public. I love spreading the knowledge I have learnt myself or has been passed to me. Without doing it your keeping it for yourself and never helping anyone else!
