View Full Version : Do your birds know when you look at them (even when sleeping)?

I was just musing this with Jef and I figured I would see if anyone else has noticed this.
Whenever I look at Rosie, she catches me. Now, I'm not talking anything attention catching. She will be playing and I will only move my eyes (not my head) in her direction. She catches me and drops her toys, poops and lifts her foot up for me to come get her. This happens when she is preening, unless she is really into it. She even catches me when she is sleeping. I can see her eyes closed out of the corner of my eye. But as soon as I look directly at her...those eyes pop right open. It's crazy!!!
So I was wondering if it is just my kooky girl? Or is it a prey animal thing? It must be tiring to be that aware all the time. You would think she would want to nap now and then....but Rosie NEVER naps!

It must be a prey animal thing. All I have to do is look at Dori from across the room - she doesn't even have to see me, she can just FEEL it, and she straightens up and stops doing whatever she's doing to annoy me.
I think your right Kendra, they have to be aware all the time of eyes on them or it could mean serious trouble if they were in the wild.
I have been watching Lady rather closely to try and learn her body language but I do it openly most of the time. There are those times when I just want to see what is keeping her quite without disturbing her and what she has that she finds so entertaining, but she will notice and sometimes stop, and wait for a few seconds, (I guess to see what I'm doing or going to do) and then continue with whatever. Other times she will lose interest in what she is doing and come over to see what I want or have for her.
Lady does take naps though but they never seem to be sound ones, just kind of rests her eyes.

Wow Kendra! None of my 4 are that tuned-in to my glances. Yes, they respond when I look in their direction... but I haven't noticed that any of them are overly concerned when I merely move my eyes toward them. When napping they will awaken, though, upon any movements nearby. Maybe Rosie is just hypersensitive in the surveillance department ;). Either that, or she has somehow tapped directly into your thoughts :p

Rain and Starburst, when asleep.. If we look at them.. Typically will open an eye.. Look at us and the go back to sleep... It's strange.. They must get that.... Someone is looking at me, feeling too.. Lol

My Ziggy does it also when he is sleeping or awake. I think it is because they are so bonded to us that they do it. Ziggy talks to me in his sleep......lol.

Oh wow, Ron. What does he say?
With Sassy, I know she's aware of movement around her if she's trying to nap but she try's to block it out and shuts her eyes tighter! Chip is an amazingly aware bird, nothing goes unnoticed but he's also a very shy bird. If Amigo has been outside for awhile and I know it's his nap time in his hole in his tree, I've tried to sneak out for a walk without him, (only because I don't want him to follow me out of his territory), NO WAY, JOSE! I'll get halfway down the hill, thinking I made a clean escape, and here he comes swooping past my side to let me know that there is no way on earth that I'm going to slip by, not on HIS watch! :). To me, Kendra, it sounds like you and Rosie have a bond like no others!

Lol, Mare. I can just picture both Sassy squeezing her eyes shut and Amigo following you down the hill.
I usually wish Rosie isn't so aware of me. Between the yelling when I try to sneak away to use the powder room and the guilt when I ignore her lifted foot, I think a little less awareness would be nice.

I have tried to do these things with Mina as well. Your right she will be very happily playing with her toy and if I look at her she drops it! No poop. It's a bummer because I like watching her have fun. It makes me smile. I've even put my hands over my eyes then peeked through and she still knows. Silly bird.
