On the 20th I will be picking up 5lbs of millet. What's the best way to store it?

I was always under the impression if you store millet in an airtight container in a cool, dry and dark place, it will keep for several months.

I second that, that's how I like to keep mine if I have any left over (which is rare with these three, and I usually just buy one stick per bird at a time so they know it's a treat and not food). But I do know that the store I buy it from just keeps it in a sturdy cardboard box and puts a lid on it overnight.

I give Riley one spray every 2 weeks so this is going to last a LONG time.

I use a huge air tight mason jar, the old kind with a rubber gasket and latch on the top lid...

Heat, air and moisture are the enemies of whole grains. All whole grains should be stored in airtight containers with tight-fitting lids or closures

You could probably also keep it in ziplock bags in the freezer to ensure its stays free of bugs as well!:)

I bet we could all use a second refrigerator just for bird food.

I keep all my bird food and treats in a 10lb airtight storage container from mysafebirdstore. Any fresh food I buy goes into the bird only mini fridge I bought.

I wouldn't recommend keeping it it cardboard boxes as that might encourage mice into the house (may not be a problem where you are). Frozen millet on a hot summer's day Justin?

I ended up buying an air tight food storage bin like I have for my dog food and bird seed.

Casper I am not sure if that was a question or a joke:p. I would assume it would not stay frozen long as it is a grain and probably wouldn't keep cold long.

Milletcicles! Love the idea! :) Robyn, I think you are on the right path. I only buy enough at a time to last a week or so but I do notice that the feed store and pet store that I buy from don't contain their's in anything but cardboard boxes..hmm..might be a country hillbilly thing,,not sure :)

The fact that your's will be around, probably a lot longer than the feed or pet store's, I think an air tight container will do.
