Left and Right sided feathers

Really, I think there is a difference. Ever notice that? Today I was separating the different sizes of feathers I have collected and noticed that some seem to come from her left side and others the right. Of course some are just as straight as can be as well. I'm thinking those come from her chest.

I haven't in the past due to wanting to create something from her feathers first. Although as I looked at how many I have I just may be sending some off. I saw the post you made and bookmarked it for future reference.

Hi Abby,

Whenever Lady drops any from bathing or however I just take them and give then a good spray with vinegar and water. Once they are clean I put them in a ziploc for safe keeping :th_smile:.

Yes, Alice, I have definitely noticed a difference between left and right sided feathers but only when it comes to wing feathers. "Flight" feathers, in particular have a unique pattern, all their own, an aero-dynamic build to them that is fascinating! I'll try and get some pics up.

Rosie's feathers on the right and left side match perfectly. Right down to a dot of white on two feathers on each side. I had matched them up and was amazed before I sent them out last time. Her vets office told me they are identical on each side, but maybe that is just a GW thing? I wasn't sure I believed them until I saw it myself. :-)

I'm unsure how many of Rosie's primaries are currently clipped short. But all primary flight feathers have a natural curvature and are typically perfect opposites of their counterparts on the other wing. Salsa is no exception; his primaries on each wing curve toward the center of his back. Perhaps you're referring to feathers other than her primaries?

Here are a couple quick snaps of a few of Salsa's flight feathers:

You can see the natural inward curve of each feather and how the quills are closer to the convex leading edge of each feather. Moreover, you should as well notice an absence of color on the inward edges (appearing as a charcoal gray on the top, rather than blue, and a maroon on the bottom, rather than red). So I think it depends upon which part of the bird the feathers are from... none of the flight feathers should be symmetrical, and each of them should have a nearly exact opposite counterpart feather on the opposite wing. Does that make sense?
