So today we got a visit from agricultural canada...the department that looks after the well being of animals. Our birds are our babies and are taken care of appropriately. The visit was the result of some random person feeling we had to many birds. As we all know they can get loud and I believe this was an assumption that because of the volume we had to many birds. We do indeed have a lot, but the noise is more or less contained within the house. The trouble is the macaws and muluccan cockatoo are super loud.Do you think if I were to put up some styrofoam in the area to reduce the echo the noise could more or less be contained?Any other ideas are welcomed as the threat is I will loose some of my birds.Dont want that happening.
Hey Dave,
Sorry to hear this news. I did a little research on Styrofoam and sound proofing and this is the first article I found:

Another article said acoustic foam is best to reduce sound: [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]
This article seems to go into more detail about both: [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]
Hope they help provide some insight, but there is much more available to read.

Are the Too and the Macs screaming continually? Or is it mainly at certain times of the day? If they frequently scream at times other than during the mornings and/or during the evenings, do you think these birds might be dealing with some emotional issues? And do you believe the complaint(s) came from one or more of your existing neighbors? And if you do, how near to your own home are the homes of your neighbors?
You can probably dampen the audio from your big guys to a point... but depending upon the proximity of the people who hear them (and who are disturbed by them), doing so may not be enough to quell concerns. Certain screaming patterns among companion birds can amount to a chronic problem with few to no solutions.
You may want to contact Justin (jtbirds) to ask his opinion. He had a Cockatoo with a chronic screaming issue and successfully dealt with the matter through behavior modification techniques. You can drop Justin a PM if you like.
Best of luck in finding an effective solution.

That sure sounds normal to me. Please let us know how your soundproofing effort works out. And good luck with everything!
I'm happy to hear that they don't scream constantly! :). That would be AWFUL! They sure can be loud, though. Are you in a separate house or an apartment? Sharing a wall with these guys, for someone who doesn't own them, could be challenging :). Good luck with your efforts!

Ha...you would think I was nuts if you saw our setup. We are in a house we own, but on a fairly small lot.I spoke to my neighbors and none of them have any problem with the tiny bit of noise they hear...after all the windows are closed.Anway, in our livingroom we have 2breeding pairs of greys and one single girl. One Jenday and Goldcapped that share a cage .One breeding pair of green quakers. One breeding pair of suns. Two breeding pairs of firey shoulders OneSevere macaw, one military macaw.one blue crowned conure, one black winged jardine, one greater jardine and one hahns macaw. Our dining room table was removed to accomodate one pair each of greenwing, Blue and Gold ,Calico and Military breeders. The frontbof the house has one pair grey breeders and a single male(he lost his matelast week) and finally our bedroom...yup you heard correctly. Our bedroom contains our remaining muluccan, one pair blue quakers, one pair green/blue quakers and our lovely confirmed tres marias amazon breeders. No shortage of poop here.

:) Good luck to you [Id give it a shot]. I read somewhere [and this is here] as long as you don't have 50 or more, then you don't need some sort of permit. I don't know what your township allows [here theirs a limit on dogs]. As long as the birds are well cared for [which they are] figure out your laws and try to reduce the sound .

Personally trying sound proofing sounds like an ok idea, but honestly the sound is probably closer to flock related then anything. You have a large amount of birds in many different rooms screaming or contact calling is going to be a never ending issue. I would provide tons of toys and entertainment even for the breeders. I have had a few chronic screamers since the one plax mentioned and it can really make issues adopting/ re homing/ or even living with these birds because of complaints. I am in a similar situation but mine is just making sure all the work I have done with my guys passes over in our move! I will be leaving some of "our" families birds here and come back daily to visit, but everything that is mine I will be experiencing similar procedures. Although soundproofing may not work well with a m2 that can scream as loud as a jet engine.
YIKES! I'm out'a here! THAT many birds, sounds like too many, to me!!
