So I have been inactive due to many reasons! The rescue is busy, my birds are busy, and I got very busy for the past few weeks. I have been looking into apartments and one that will fulfill my needs! I currently rent from my parents where the rescue is located, but have been looking to move out. One stipulation was I would not move into an apartment far away as I need to be there for the rescue. The second was an apartment that would allow birds. I finally found a two bedroom apartment that will allow birds and they seem to have no issues as long as the birds do not create a huge issue... I am slightly afraid and slightly confident. I am confident that my birds are rather quiet because I have always taught them screaming isn't needed 24/7 that there are other ways to communicate with me. I am slightly afraid that an issue will come up, but I believe any rational person would be afraid of this. If anyone has tips that is great!

One bedroom will be mine and my fiancees, the others the birds! I will post pictures hopefully of the bird room once complete but moving and all will be plenty!

I plan to take my senegal parrot/ my amazon/ lars- the blue throated macaw/ possibly our goffins cockatoo/ my white bellied caique/ hopefully my catalina macaw.

All of these guys are generally quite with the exception that happens once in awhile, The only issue I see is with the goffins cockatoo honestly and she isn't really that bad just once in a blue moon does she let out a yelp. The catalina also worries me because she bangs bells like a mad women and then screams like a women. So I will have to see/ talk to the neighbors first. Which is my general plan bring the ones that are no issue and talk to the neighbors feel them out and move on from there.

Even if one doesn't work out they will stay at the house where I will be everyday anyway! This is a huge step and life change for me and I do not want to do it without my birds/ friends:). I even had to pay a decent bit more per month to get an apartment that would work with me.. the only reason I did was for my passion/ love of these birds. I told the apartment manager that crying children where more then likely a bigger issue then my birds.. she gave me odd looking eyes and told me of a bad experience with a past husbands macaw. So i have a mission to.. to change her mind about these amazing companions. I am going to do this in a smart way, but just holding my hopes that my neighbors are awesome and my birds are up to the expectations I have held of them!

kind regards,
Justin

Pictures of the new bird room in January maybe?

Hi Jt,

It's exciting to begin a new journey although moving is never easy, it's wonderful that you found an apartment that will fit your needs. I can understand that you have both a confidence as well as being slightly concerned, but you just have to go for it. I sounds as if you have done your homework and even have good plans for working things out if needed.
I look forward to hearing how everything works out as well as the pics in the new year.

Wow Justin, that's a major development in your life! I think your plan sounds reasonable; I hope it all works out to your expectation. Your strategy of attempting to 'precondition' your neighbors is wise. If you can make friends with them before you've fully populated your new apartment with your birds, it can only help your situation. Many years ago I lived in an apartment with Jack and Maynard. It worked out for me. Best of luck!

Thanks plax I have no worries about a few.. the amazon/goffins are my biggest concern. The catalina screams like a women once in awhile and that could set off a red flag I dont want to worry anyone.. I expect no real issues, but as you said condition them to the birds maybe get them holding a few and tempt their likings! I am sure with the group of people that lives where I am headed it should be good.

I have moved 3 times with my birds. Changes in their surroundings tends to get birds upset for a couple of of weeks but with the same cages and people they should adjust well. The biggest change for my birds was their normal flying patterns were disrupted. They stayed around the cages for a while. I walked them around the new apartments on my shoulders until they both seemed to settle in. Best of luck to you.

Hey Justin! I don't think you have anything to worry about. I'm a lifetime apartment-dweller, we hardly ever have anyone say anything but "oh no, we LOVE hearing them from afar, it's so much better than that last person's dog who barked non-stop. We like the birds!" The only problem I've had is when the kids next upstairs walk by and start screaming "HI BIRDY!" and all three of mine go off because they hear the noise, but that was easily stopped when the parents realized that it started riling the birds up. Other than that, most people just ask if they can see the birds because they're not something that many people are used to. Just keep reinforcing the good behaviors (with both birds and neighbors) and give the feathered kids a tour of the apartment so they know how to get around, and I think you guys will do great. Congrats on the new place! How exciting :)
