Well this is a first for me.One of our sun conures was developing an overgrown beak and was due for a nail trim. This was not the first time for eather. So my daughter and I take him out of the cage wraped safely for the trim and he has a heart attack and dies in my hand. All the while his mate watches on.We breed birds....I'm not accustom to losing them...especially like this.
Oh wow, Dave... I'm so sorry to hear this :(. I've actually heard of it happening before a number of times. While it may not be a likely thing to occur, it's still always a possibility. The sad fact is that some birds don't know they're not being murdered when we perform maintenance procedures on them. You'd think that each bird would become used to regular grooming/maintenance procedures, and I think that many of them in fact do (at least to a point). But if you happen to have a bird with a pronounced phobia, and especially if that bird has an unknown/undiagnosed cardiovascular condition, the worst can sadly occur. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss. I wish the best for the male conure's poor mate :'(. Sincere condolences to you.
Oh Dave,
I am so sorry for the loss of your little one. Could it be that there was more going on with this little guy then you could of known?

It's possible, but unlikely anything else was going on.Up until I attempted his trim he was active and strong. The only real thing I could suggest was his beak growing as fast as it was may have been as a result of something unknown that weakened him.It seems so unfair to have seen him playing with his mate one minute and gone the next. She's breaking our hearts as she keeps looking at me as if to say when are you bringing him back. These two cuddled up together to sleep every night and often even during the day.Uggggg what a night.
That's such a hard thing to deal with... It's terribly heartbreaking about the little guy's mate :'(. Life is simply too fragile! Indeed a horribly sad turn of events :(

I am so, so sorry, for all of you!!!
Ohh..this is such sad news, I'm so sorry. Will you try and introduce a new bird to the female? If they mate for life, this would be truly a tragic loss :(

This has happened to me before as well. Running the rescue we groom many many birds and some of other peoples to. Recently I had an eclectus female in for grooming and this happened. There is nothing you can do, there usually are no signs and it is usually death even when trying to bring them back. Sorry for the loss, but please don't blame yourself it happens to the best of us.

Sad for you.. It's terrible to lose one.. It's even worse to haveit happen unexpectedly and have absolutely no chance to help them.. I'm sorry for your loss and hope you will find sense in this..

This is so heartbreaking.
If a beak grows out fast that can be an indication of liver issues. Did you have a necropsy done?
I would have allowed the female to see him so she knows what happened, knows that he is dead and she won't be constantly looking for him.

Thanks all.I suspect it may have been a liver issue based on my reading as well.As for our little female, she's always watching out for him. When we were starting the nail clip and things went bad, she was watching what was going on.I likely won't try to pair her up.These two were inseparable since they were put together very young, she never new life without him.I just worry she will be afraid of me now. Time will tell.I didn't have a necroscopy done,as I'm certain it was a heart attack based on how the end came.As for the cause, I'm certain it was nothing that would be contagious, likely just genetic.
Thanks for the update Dave, I hope you and your daughter are doing well also.
I hope little girl comes to terms and keeps you in her life, that would be ideal. :( sorry, still sad for her..

So sorry Dave. I'm sure it was a bad shock for you. Hope your little girl gets along ok. Please keep us updated. You love her and are kind and she will know that and so even if she is a little afraid now it will pass because she knows how much u care.

SO Sorry about your loss. It's heartbreaking when it happens, and you're not holding them or doing anything to them or with them. My heart goes out to you and your daughter. Perhaps another mate would help your little girl though, or even another bird close by as a positive distraction? ( just thinking)
