Poor Salsa. Looks like he is trying to cover his ears. Sooo beautiful too.Thanks. He was disturbed by Maynard's overwhelming yelling tonight. Usually he yells back "you're loud!" or "too loud!" with authority. This time he just said "loud" in a meekly disturbed, almost defeated voice. I think he felt resigned to the fact that there was nothing he could really do about Maynard's persistence :(

Poor Salsa, indeed! Wow! Birds can be SO loud. I've always wondered if it hurts other bird's ears that are confined to the same room? Salsa seems to be handling it, with a withering look..but, what can you do? I always feel sorry for Chip when the evening "bell tower" tolls!

Poor Guy!! Sounds like he yelled "Stop!!!!!". Rosie, who generally ignores my ipad came over and touched her beak to Salsa. Then started muttering. :)

Rosie, who generally ignores my ipad came over and touched her beak to Salsa. Then started muttering. :)Aww, that's sweet of her :). I guess she must have understood Salsa's frustration and empathized with him a bit.

Oh things like this really leads me to believe that they do understand the meaning of some of the words they pick up from us. Hope Salsa is having better nights.

Remember Doctor Dolittle, if I could talk to the animals.......

Remember Doctor Dolittle, if I could talk to the animals.......There is no question in my mind that they associate certain words and phrases with certain actions and objects! Question: How do you think human infants learn language? I'll tell you... they do so through an association of specific sounds and syllables with certain actions and objects ;). In my view, it's the same process. Granted, human children are typically able to build much further onto their language skills than a companion parrot might. But the learning mechanism is virtually the same. I'm not saying that many parrots won't as well pick up and repeat words and phrases purely based upon the sound/syllable combinations while retaining little to no association with the actual meaning of those words and phrases - because they tend to do that as well. But we humans do the same thing (at least on a certain level). The next time you remember the tune of a song you've recently heard, but not the words to that song, and you then begin humming or whistling the tune to yourself, think about what you've just done. You've in fact 'parroted' a combination of sounds. So we humans as well perform mimicry without incorporating any associative meaning at times :D

As for Salsa... he's doing fine :). He may become frustrated with Maynard's hollering sessions, but he usually recovers quite quickly ;)
