I have a 12-year-old Nanday Conure that was adopted from a young lady who couldn't keep her when she went off to college. Before that, she was apparently a breeder bird, so we got her used to human contact, but she came with a teenage attitude and some semblance of a vocabulary when we first got her. She talked on the "phone". "Hello? Uh-huh...uh-huh.... *chatter* no. Uh-huh. *garble* Okay, bye! Bye-bye. Bye-bye!" Since she has become an aspect of our everyday lives, as any bird should be, she's picked up quite a few other things. Now when I greet her in the morning, she greets ... herself, too. "Good morning Rose." She also tells me bye-bye when I'm going to work and night-night when it's time for bed. Unfortunately, she's also picked up phrases like "what the hell?" from us. She's also has quasi-conversations with us, including one time when the lovebird got into her cage (while she was out of it) and we told her, and she went "Oh, that's okay" - are you sure that's okay, Rose? - "yeah, that's okay. It's fine". That one just about floored me! She's also said things like "I don't know" and told my mom "excellent!" the last time she was cleaning her cage (I guess Rose thought she was doing a good job).

Anyone else have a Nanday with a good vocabulary?

I don't. The only Nanday who's close to being in my life is Bosley, the one living with my mother that I told you about. He does talk. But not nearly as much, or as appropriately (response-wise) as Rose does. Her responses of "Oh, that's okay" and "Yeah, that's okay.. It's fine" when Dori got into her cage are simply astonishing. Sometimes what these guys say seems precisely appropriate for a situation and seems to have purely perfect timing. I find myself wondering at times where they've learned certain words, sentences, or phrases which no one has seemingly ever heard them say before. It makes me wonder just how great their potential may be to comprehend the complete meanings of various statements we make in their presence, and to formulate their responses accordingly. They can indeed be mysteriously impressive at times!

When Sassy is ready for bedtime, she will start chanting night-night, Sassy. She knows when it's time for the lights to be shut down and the curtains closed. She appropriately says endearing things, in a whisper, as here cage is getting covered..very quietly she will say nite-nite Sassy, nite-nite Boobers :th_heart: I tend to believe these birds know what's up and when!
