So we were eating supper and the topic about my brother getting a bird came up then my dad started looking really sad and he said that we wouldn't get birds and even my mom has wanted birds for a long time.
His reasoning made me want to cry :( he said he used to have a budgie and he loved the bird so much and taught it so much and on Christmas... It passed :th_crycry:
He also started to rant about keeping birds in cages and how people think that a bird is just happy to sit in a tiny cage... And I was quite surprised!

But now my brother is obsessed with cockatiels and is researching!! :0 :0

Hi Ivory. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your dad's budgie. I'm as well sorry to learn his decision as far as you and your brother not being able to get a pet bird. Your dad is correct in that many people incorrectly believe that birds are happy to merely remain in their cages on a continual basis, when the truth is they need and desire plenty of out-of-cage time. Every bird deserves so much more than life locked inside of a small cage. They're simply not designed for that kind of a life.

Your whole family should probably have many discussions on the topic of acquiring and caring for a bird if you think that your dad will eventually come around and permit you to get one. And one more thing, Ivory... If you do get a bird, always keep it away from your cat and/or dog! No predatory pet should ever have physical access to a pet bird! It poses too great of a risk. A fatal attack upon a bird can happen in a split-second, and when it's least expected... then your bird is dead :(

Whatever you end up doing as far as the possibility of bringing a bird into your life, I wish you the best of luck.

So now my brother is really sad...
He straight forwardly asked my dad if he could get a bird and my dads response was no...
So if I filled up five pages straight in this topic with the letter A, that is equivalent to me spending six months convincing my parents for a hamster. For a bird, my dad said, would be somewhere around me putting the letter A for 1000 posts..
So my brother kinda gave up on birds :/ he's really bummed.
Usually at this point if we weren't allowed to get an animal I would leave the forum right away, but I think the people here are too nice so I will probably stay :th_chickendance:

I'm so sorry, Ivory. Maybe you can keep up on your research about birds and their care, and keep your dad informed about your efforts and what you've learned. I'm just thinking that if he sees you are committed for a long period and willing to learn and take on the responsibilities involved, he may change his mind at some point. The same goes for your brother. It's just a thought. Best of luck on that if you decide to pursue it.

And BTW, we're happy to have you remain here as an active member for as long as you wish :)

I agree with plax and as well think keep active on the forums. The knowledge you gain today can be used for years and years:). never forget that about anything in life and you will always learn.
