So I am thinking about trying essential oils and my questions are. Have any of you tried them? Are they safe to use around the fids? Did they work for you? Do you have advice? Would you recommend them? Plus any info or stories you would like to share.

This is something to discuss with a TRUE AVIAN VET. There are a lot of essential oils that are extremely harmful to birds as well as other animals.... Absolutely NO TREE OILS OR TEA TREE OILS OF ANY KIND. The MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS That birds repository systems are far more sensitive than ours. What we can tolerate ORGANIC or not CAN KILL a bird. Please please please consult an avian vet. (not just a vet that also sees birds) but a true avian vet. One that specializes in birds and ONLY birds. It is much more safe for you and your fids. They will tell you what you can or can not use.

Be cautious.. I've seen companies claim that certain things are "safe" only to find out that they're really not..

So be sure to really be cautious.. Good luck with your search :)

I don't use anything for myself or my pets without fully researching it first. But I prefer to use natural remedies over anything else if I can. Also, a lot of times with oils and herbs, it's how you use them. One way of using it could be helpful and another way of using it could cause a lot of harm. Research is the key, also talking to people about what has worked for them and what hasn't. Sometimes the simplest things make the biggest difference.

It's a blanket statement :)

We are using young living and I've only been warned about a few oils. So far research is good.

A couple of years ago at the TASC bird fair they had a speaker about the oils and I ended up buying a bottle but just never started using it. Sort of a gut feeling after knowing oils should not be used around birds. When I took Jody to the vet who is into the holistic things I brought the bottle with and asked his opinion. He read the label and I think it was the combination of things in it, (lavender, lemon and orange) that he was not comfortable with and it just never got used.

There was another vet there, Dr Becker that sat in on this seminar after presenting her own and in some ways I wanted to ask her opinion also but she is a good friend of the president of the club, she was a speaker and I felt I might not get a true answer from her as she more than likely would not bad mouth another speaker.

Never used the stuff and just won't.

Yeah.. It's terrible how people will willfully endanger the life of you or your pets, all for a lousy buck... (I'm not saying this endangers your life, just that people have swept info about products that do us all harm, under the table for a buck)

If in doubt, just don't use it..

We went through this with scentsy.. It said to be OK.. But a few vets I've talked to said that even without the "combustion" which is usually the harmful part of scented candles... The oils alone can be harmful..

So we sold the stuff off.. I really like the black raspberry vanilla too.. But we won't use it cause I love my feathered owners more... Lol

I love the smell of vanilla oil, but I won't use it - I used to use it long ago. The only essential oil that I use around here is cassia. And I use it strictly for ant control... and I only apply targeted dabs of it when needed. So there is no vaporization or prolonged use of essential oils here. I personally think that asking a qualified avian vet about a particular scent oil one may wish to use around their birds is the safest policy.

Well we are going that route for arthritis treatment with Cookie. She has had coconut oil massages for her feet and medication and many other things.

Amanda, red palm oil is supposed to be of help with arthritis and oil palm fruit is a food staple for greys in the wild. Have you looked into Sunshine factor by Harrisons bird foods?
