I've been going over to my friends place about once a week to help out with the birds. Mostly to help hand feed the babies. He is the one who was offering me the macaw which I am not going to take. I've decided that they are a little too big for my house. The experience of learning to hand feed has been extraordinary and very interesting. Which brings me to the topic of grapefruit seed oil. He puts a little bit of it in the formula for his babies. He also takes it himself. When I came home I did a little reading on it and it has tons of heath benefits that is good for us and our fids. it is anti viral, anti fungal, helps with yeast infections, and a whole lot more. It's worth looking into. and maybe asking your vet about.

So true. Been using it for years now. I use it to wash my hands with before touching the birds. Use it for dental hygiene also. It is kind of like tea tree oil.

I have a bird owning friend online who uses it to scrub her bird dishes with every day. And she adds a few drops to the water to retard the bacteria til she can scrub them again.

I can't find it around my area. Probably only online for me.

I've also heard it was a great disinfectant. I've never used it but will definitely check it out. Thanks Lori! :)

I've used it for myself in the past but never thought of it for the birds

I use it all the time for Mina's cage and water dishes. After I use the poop off the I use the the grapefruit seed extract mixed with water in a spray bottle and spray her grill and wipe it all down. Then I use it on the pan too. I use it on her water dishes all to disinfect. I put 2 drops of organic vinegar in her water. Her vet said the grapefruit seed extract is too caustic for their crops. It's ok for our bellies we make a lot of bile but birds don't really make anything to break it down in the crop.
