I know a lady who has a blue & gold macaw & I've heard from a family member that because the parrot screeches for attention a lot, they just cover her up & bang on her cage :-( this is abuse & I want to help this parrot but how do I go about it?

Try to become friends with the women [ an indirect approach]. Or they just become defensive. Say you want to be friends with another bird owner and you have a toy your birds don't like and see if she wants it , Get talking to them [Im sure they will share their problems].

I agree with Terri, try and befriend this person. Once you have done this you can try and explain what she is doing is wrong and try to give her some tips on how to handle her Macaw! If she does not want to do this, then maybe she would be interested in letting you take care of him or her?

They are probably not mean people. They probably do this out of frustration because they don't know a better way to handle it. Try to become friends with her and maybe you can help.
I agree with Lori. Not that I ever covered my bird or banged on his cage!! But..I remember myself as a new U2 owner and not knowing how to cope with the noise and not knowing why this was happening (I'd never heard of bird forums, at this time, and knew no bird folks to ask that were around), I was beside myself and at the breaking point, many times.
Befriending these folks may help you to be able to guide them but only if they are open to your suggestions. Bird forums helped me tremendously in my journey of understanding my birds.

Yes, they have to be open minded. I once had a friend who had fish and they kept on dying. She wanted to know how I kept my tank so sparkling and the fish alive. I told her exactly how to do it. It was a whole lot easier than what she was doing. The next week she was doing the exact same thing she always did. After a few weeks of this I gave up. Some people are impossible.
But, some people just don't know and would do something different if they knew how or knew where to find help.
I hope you are able to help this lady with her bird or be able to help the bird by giving it a home.

Did you ever make any head way with this ?
After reading this thread, I too would like to know what has been happening. I currently don't have anyone I know that has a bird. It would be great to know what to do if this should happen to me.
