I thought I would start a thread where we could share fun bird facts that we may have learned here and there about parrots and other Birds. I'll start with one :)

Did you know that Ravens and crows are very playful? They have been see sliding down snowbanks on their backs and sliding repeatedly down church windows :)

Palm Cockatoos - only lay one egg every second year. The males have a bigger beak [so you might be able to tell them apart]. I think they are one of the most expensive birds ive seen [even more than hyacinths ].

The Albatross has a 14ft. wing span and only needs to land once every couple of years to breed. They can sleep while in flight, cruising at a speed of 25mph. They can travel hundreds of thousands of miles per flight! I found this fascinating!

The Mockingbird is an iconic bird native to the US. These fearless creatures are willing to take on a Red Tailed Hawk or Human with equal zeal. Every year in late Spring, hundreds of Mockingbird chicks are taken to rescues because they fell out of their nests. Only they didn't fall, they jumped! It is natural for a Mockingbird chick to leave the nest before it can fly. It heads for the bushes or thick undergrowth where its parents still care for it and its speed is a more useful defense. During this stage their greatest enemies are cats, dogs, lawn mowers and grass trimmers. So if you find a helpless Mockingbird chick under your azaleas, leave it alone: its right where it should be.
