View Full Version : Amigo's 'second' favorite tree :)
If you can find him, ( he's fairly centered in the photo), you will notice him modifying this oak to his design. Take notice of the branches on the right, they are cleared of brush. This tree has several holes in it where in a perfect world, he could bring a mate, sorry Amigo, ain't gonna happen :(. He will spend most of his days clearing out holes and trimming branches, chasing away the woodpeckers, a shower here and there and a lot of sunbathing! :)

This is another reason I don't want to bring in more U2s to fly with him. Could you imagine the desert we would have in a few years?

What kind of tree is it? It is inspiring to hear and see Amigo lifestyle.

Dianne those are Oak trees. Tough old trees, but looks like even they are no match for the stealthy Amigo! LOL
I can see why the Rainforest and other places where wild parrots are naturally plentiful are so thick with trees. It takes a tremendous amount to keep just one parrot from making it look 'Strip Mined'.

What a lovely life Amigo has. There is certainly no fear of him ever becoming bored :)

Thanks for the tree ID. I know Oak trees are listed on the unsafe fir birds list. How does this go with a bird that is landing/sitting in a tree outside?
Thanks everyone! Yes, I've got to admit, Amigo has a pretty good life :). Dianne, this bird has chewed on every plant, tree, bush and grass, in the yard and he's never had any ill effects. He loves the grapes, when ripe, he will hang out in the vines for at least an hour a day. When the apricot trees were in bloom, I could always find him crawling around the branches munching on blooms and once the fruit is ripe he will return to get his fill.
We have never sprayed poison on our property so, have never feared that. Thankfully, all the plants that are suppose to be toxic to parrots have never bothered him!

I'm thinking maybe why Amigo is not affected by the plants and trees that are supposed to present problems for parrots is because he is not chewing or staying on just that one species of plant for very long.
What I mean by that is in a small cage a bird has a very limited amount of things he has available to chew or sit on. So given the same possible harmful limbs to chew & sit on in a cage or play perch would be much more detrimental due to him getting too much into his system. Freely choosing where he will chew & sit gives Amigo lots of variety and he doesn't get an overdose of the harmful stuff in concentrated doses.
No documented research involved in my comment. Just my personal opinion of why Amigo handles it all and does not get sick. :)
De'Andrea, I have to agree to some extent. If Amigo spent most of his day in a poison oak plant, I'm sure there would be some I'll effects, I don't know how there couldn't be! It's a nasty plant! He spends 90% of his day outside, in oak trees and has been doing this for a few years, sometimes sleeping in them. If it is poisonous to parrots, he is immune and that may have come from his long exposure,,strong immune system? Not sure!
