View Full Version : A hand full of weeds :)
Who knew?! I never thought about giving my caged birds a clump of weeds and grass from the yard, until today! Sassy and Chip are in seventh heaven and especially enjoying the dirt that's attached to the roots! I'll see Amigo on the ground and he likes to dig up the grass and chew on the roots, so, I thought, why wouldn't Chip and Sassy like this, also!?

Please make sure, if you try this, that the grass isn't poisonous. We don't spray around here and my horses are grazing the yard, at the moment. I know we are safe.

Codie loves flowers, but I have not tried him with weeds.
Sassy looks like she is enjoying them :)
Wendy, I doubt that you could find ONE weed in your beautiful yard! :). Let alone a CLUMP!

Can you plant organic dandelion seeds. Dandelion greens are the top for bird nutrition. I really like your photo.
Oh! Really good thought, Dianne! No need to plant, here,,,they grow wild. I'll have to remember to pick some when I see them, thanks!

I bet she would love to dig!!! You should make her a enclosed outdoor playbox :)
This is an outdoor cage we set up, last year, with high hopes for Sassy to enjoy. The bummer is, Amigo will terrorize her, from the outside, the whole time she is in it :(

WOW!! That's so cool :)
It's the perfect outdoor cage but if Amigo is outside when Sassy is in it, he will spend hours trying to bite off her toes if she is on the cage sides,,very stressful for her. We actually bought this cage with intent of having it be an Amigo place to stay so's we could leave for a week at a time and have someone come and keep him fed and watered. He's been in it a few times, doesn't really mind being in it but he was always like, "why am I in here?". Our next thought process was, let's set up one more so Amigo doesn't have to be out here by himself,,anyways, long story short, the cage sits and grows grass under it! :)

Hey Mare those weeds look just like the ones I have in my yard when we are lucky enough to get rain to grow anything!! When I do have weeds & wild grasses such as winter rye and what I call bird seed grass due to the small seed pod sprigs it has, I pick the for my tortoises and I have given my flock some as well. They all enjoy it immensely, especially the budgies.
Dianne I also have wild Dandelions growing about when it rains enough to come up and grow before the hot summer hits. In good winters Dandelion greens are the only wild weeds along with winter rye grass I have to pick for my tortoises. When we have normal winters they grow all winter long. The rest of their green foods are bought, except for the prickly pear pads that grow in my yard.
I also have an idea to make a large outdoor aviary something like what you have there Mare that I can add natural limbs or roll each play perch out into so my flock can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine without the threat of flying off. I want to add it to my front door and eventually glass it in for use in all types of weather when we are there, not to be housed in. Then once I glass that one in I will add another wire one to the front of that for the fresh air for them to be in again. See, I pretend I want the 1st one glassed in for year round use and Jerry never realizes I have just buffaloed him into making another one for the birds. :th_pinklol2:
Here is Chip, enjoying some of the harvest! :)

Lucky fids and lucky you! My birds would just look at that and walk away. They like their food chopped. Besides, my hubby puts down stuff for ants so I cannot use anything out of my lawn.
