How important is it for parrots to be kept together or by themselves? Personally, I think it is vital for a bird to have at least one other companion bird in the home. The enrichment and social encounters provided by us humans is inconsistent at best. Take for instance the need for a bird in the wild to be in a flock and or with a lifetime partner. Can we humans really a substitute for that? I think birds should know they are birds and not humans with feathers. What do you think??

Yes, I think a bird should have a companion, but sometimes this is not always possible. I am thinking about getting another, but am worried how Codie will react :( Obviously I have been his soul mate for nearly 3 years now.

I think ideally if at all possible then do it . Im able to have so many .Cause they have conformed to this schedule and do everything at the same time [its neat]. I do believe they have friends among each other and seem happy. I think with more then one bird they seem to figure out what to do and how to entertain themselves.

I prefer to keep mine in pairs or trios of the same species. Not necessarily for breeding, but so they have someone to talk to that speaks their language

When I got back into keeping larger parrots I had a couple of budgies, but I figured they would not suffice for companionship if I only brought one bird home. And I knew I would not be able to spend every waking hour with Roscoe. So I brought home two macaws, brothers and for the first 3 months they were able to be in the same enclosure together. Then Mr. Smarty Pants Roscoe became too dominate over Angel biting his feet which he absolutely has to have for climbing. They are side by side and don't like to be out of sight from each other, but each one still loves me the same.

I added Leyla Belle later even tho she was actually the 2nd bird I had picked out after Roscoe to come live with me once she weaned. Roscoe and Angel took another bird in the house with stride and it did not change their love for me. Adding Ruby Jewel went just as smoothly and the boys were not fazed a bit with having another macaw in the ranks. Roscoe and Ruby Jewel are jealous of each other if I am close by. So far all my feathered kids accept that this is a multi bird flock and family. :)
