Oscar is nearly back to himself now I'm over the moon, the swelling on his foot has near on vanished & he hasn't picked at his foot or ripped anymore of his nail so hoping it'll grow back normal :-) he even regurgitated on me today to show his appreciation :-) [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]

That's great! Does he do autographs? I'd like to have one of a famous parrot.

Glad Oscar is making a full recovery. I can just imagine if I were to call the firefighters to come save one of my parrots, they would think it a joke. I would probably be hard pressed to convince them it was serious. That's neat how Oscar made the news in a big way. :)

It has to be a huge relief for both of you. At least now you have a well-documented tale to tell about the incident :)

If not, it's quite a sad thing... especially because they seem to hold the reputation for rescuing cats from trees, etc. If they used to rescue pets in predicaments over here but no longer do so, I wonder what their thinking is as compared to that of firefighters/departments in the UK?

Tony, I'm thinking the firefighters here in the states would probably not come out to help with a pet. Here around me in the small towns all the fire depts are volunteer. They don't stay at the firehouse and only respond when called out for a true emergency from their work place or homes. Abilene and the larger towns have 24 hr fire depts. I can't recall hearing about any pet rescues in many years other than during a fire or emergency they were called out for in which a pet was also a victim of. :(

Especially when it would involve sending a crew and equipment to do so, since it could place human lives at risk by tying up their equipment and crew. And that explanation would be the same as saying that pets just aren't as important as people :(. I, for one, disagree with such a perspective. Such an attitude is akin to the "it's just a bird" mindset  :(. Sadly, humans make the rules in this world... and as a result, those rules favor humans. Unfortunately, even considering all of the great things our firefighters in the states may do, they probably don't deserve the longstanding reputation of saving pets in jeopardy. My information seems to be that the only time they may likely rescue a pet is if they already happen to be at a scene where a pet is in trouble, thus making such a rescue somewhat convenient. And I have to wonder if they ever also refuse to rescue pets under those circumstance at times.

If my speculation here (and it is that - based upon stories that I've encountered) is incorrect, please enlighten me. It's a bit disheartening -even fairly disgusting- to believe that's the way our society has become :(

I can only give praise for the Firefighters here in the UK. They are always willing to help an animal in distress :) Just a couple of months ago they rescued a Macaw from a tree!
