This is an excellent link that everyone who keeps parrots should read. I already knew macaws needed more nuts in their diet due to their activity level. I feed my macaws as well as my ekkie shelled nuts and in shell nuts every other day along with pellets and various other mixes. I have done this since I first brought them home and have not had a problem with this schedule yet.
I often read someone telling about using nuts as an occasional treat for their parrots, but they rarely feed them as a part of their diet. Hopefully everyone who keeps these wonders in feathers will read this link and rethink the occasional nut idea. I know some parrots are very sedate and it is not advisable to feed nuts as often, but even those birds could benefit from a more routine allowance of nuts in their diet in my opinion. Nuts are just a natural food our parrots would seek out in their environment if they were free. :th_biggrin:

LOL! Codie is set in his ways like most of our fids! ;)
I used to give mine nuts everyday. But have never really known the proper amount. But after reading what others have done and looking into it further. I started doing every other day now. I think that has made a positive difference as they have been eating more of their other foods. But oh do they love nuts!!
That is another reason I loved the article you posted. So much great info!
Thanks for posting the article, Wendy! Very interesting and informative. I remember Amigo's vet telling me we shouldn't be feeding our birds walnuts...let me go research why she thought this and I'll get back to you. I was bummed to hear this because they are his favorite!
Ok, I couldn't find exactly where I had posted about what she said but it had to due with aspergillus sometimes being spread to our birds through walnuts shells. Don't quote me on that. I know many birds eat them with no issues.
A very nice article about nuts for our birds! It covered many concerns and presented plenty of facts. Its descriptions were as well bolstered by quotes from experts. Not only that, but I got a pretty good laugh out of the reference to "perch potatoes" :th_loltears:

Very interesting, thanks Wendy.
Rosie's food mix (Ultimate Blend From BP) has lots of nuts in it and then I usually throw in some. Most of them end up on the floor, with all of her food. Teddy, our little dog, gobbles up a lot of them and he is getting a bit portly.
Yesterday I was eating almonds and Rosie asked for some since she was sitting on me. I noticed she enjoyed breaking them into tiny pieces but then just dropped them. So I doubt she actually injested any. Teddy was waiting for us to get up from Rosie's recliner. When we did he hopped up and went hog wild eating all the pieces. As least they didn't go to waste.
