View Full Version : Do your birds stress when you go out?

I was just wondering if any of you have a bird that stresses when you go out?
If I go shopping, Codie does not eat or play with his toys. I know this, as when I come home, his food has not been touched and his foot toys are all still sitting in his bowl :(
As soon as I walk in the door I hear a little voice say " Hello," he knows my footsteps :th_LOL:Once he sees it is definitely me, he dives into his food and throws all his toys on the floor at the same time :th_hehe:
Who has this same problem?

Mine are ok with us leaving, unless we've been gone to long in their minds. That usually means if we're gone all day. They like their out of cage time and since we're home most of the day they're pretty much ok with us going out for a few hours.

OUrs seem to be fine but you would never know it by the way they screech when we come back in...they can hear us in the garage and all we can hear is the cockatiel screech..deafening.

Hmmmm, let me think about this. YES, YES, YES!!!
It is so ridiculous that if I leave the room she screams. Sigh... When I leave Rosie stresses, which then stresses anyone still home.

I'm with you Terri. LOL Cause my flock doesn't give a rat's hiney if I leave as long as I feed them first and show up sometime in this century to let them out again. :th_hehe:
Mine know I have a crazy schedule and they know they are not alone, so they really are fine with my leaving. I do get the normal screams and Hellos when I come home, but more so in the early morning when I return from work than if I go out for a few hours during normal hours for the rest of the world. :)
Sierra my new Pionus does have a little problem right now with calling for me every time I leave the room and she can't see me. She hasn't been around enough to learn my routine yet and I feel she will grow out of it as she settles in more.

I am thinking about adding another flock member here, although I do worry how Codie is going to react! He is very jealous of a human having my attention, let alone another bird :th_shocking:

Jester screams when we leave, but I think he's fine once we are actually gone.
When he hears the care outside when we come back, he starts calling for us. :P

Terri, in theory you would be correct.
However, Rosie is a jealous freak when it come to other birds. She goes absolutely ape wild if she sees me even talking to another bird. She barely deals with my paying attention to the dogs. There have been times she has started flapping like a loon trying to peg one of them for getting too much TLC from me. (She is clipped so she doesn't get anywhere).
So she would hate it. Plus Jef wouldn't be too happy either. ;)
Kendra, I was going to say something close to what Terri said. Amigo was not content AT ALL in his bedroom cage, when alone in his room. This is one reason for acquiring Sassy. Amigo would kill her, I know this in my heart, if he had a chance to be free in a room with her. He hates seeing me give her any attention, he starts climbing his bars and acting really upset about it, BUT...he is very content, in separate cages, when alone with her. They talk birdy talk and give each other company. A companion bird isn't ONLY for humans.:)
I re-read what I wrote and acquiring Sassy is not what I meant. Bringing her into our lives is a better fit. She can be a pill, for sure, and by bringing in another bird to be companion for your other bird, you then exponentially add to your dilemma, if you had one, of having birds in the first place!

Mare, I get what you are saying. :) Sassy was a good fit for your family, especially for your husband. ;) Although Amigo is jealous, it is nice to have the company, sometimes. Sibling rivalry at its finest, lol.
If our life wasn't so insane, I might consider it. If my husband actually liked parrots (or any kind of change), I might consider it. If I thought it really would enrich Rosie's life, I might consider it. But for now that is too many ifs to chance changing our crazy home into an insane war zone. I imagine Rosie freaking out and screaming, a new bird feeling nervous and screaming, the dogs barking, Jef screaming and Ashie crying. No thank you, I am stressed just thinking about it! :)
But I am a big believer in never say never. Things may change in the future, you just never know. :)
Yeah, you don't know till it's tried and then you live with it. You are probably right in thinking that way. Tim didn't like parrots until one came into his life that actually liked him. You never know, soo..

Kendra ,Ive been thinking about this for a few days. I bet Rosie is thinking your her mate . Getting another bird wouldn't solve her separation issues . The rest of your family needs to work hard at building their own relationship with her.

Haha, I have very mixed feelings now on whether I should get another bird! I had made my mind up on getting another this year, but I am very worried how Codie will react :( I am not going to say what species I am thinking of getting as its a surprise :)

Wendy , I think you will be fine [cause Codie knows how to be content by himself for a long time]. Will he be jealous [im sure] . You might have to only have one out at a time , But put their cages near each other . Over time they will adjust [It will surprise you} . He will like the chit chat. Maybe get a girl . Tequila has a monster crush on both the Macaws :)
