I have a little green cheek conure, he's between 5 and 6 months old. I've had him for a month and a half. I've tried to introduce different fruits and vegetables into his diet, but the only one he'll eat is apple. I figure that's a good start, but it's not a good balanced diet.

I've also tried strawberry, pumpkin, spinach, banana, broccoli, carrot, and tomato but he just hasn't seemed to have taken to any of them. We don't have much variety in our weekly shopping, so what are some good other fruit and veggies to look out for for him? Also, which ones to stay away from?

Apple seeds, lettuce, and avocado I've been told to stay away from.

It is always very hit and miss with fruit and veg. You could try cutting different types of veg up into tiny pieces and mixing it with either, pasta, brown rice, sweet potato, etc.

Sweetcorn seems to be a big favourite for many Parrots!

Other fruits you could try are grapes, pomegranate, blueberries, raspberries, melon, pineapple!

Here is another good site, which lists all the foods not to give...

I hope this helps :)

Hi Jess, I have a pineapple green cheek that is almost 7 yrs old. I got her from a previous owner when she was 5 yrs old. She was on a mix seed diet only and got a few bites of apple when the owner put pieces in her mouth for Peta to pick out. In April I will have her for 2 yrs and she was determined to not eat anything new the first year. Last year after day in & day out of offering her all kinds of new and good foods she will eat nuts, dried fruits, a little bit of mixed fresh veggies. She still prefers fruit to veggies and she will eat some of her pellets mixed in her seeds.

It's a struggle with them, but somewhere down the road he should begin to decide what its favorite foods are. And they love to change & not like something they adored the week before. It is young & still trying to figure out what it likes. Also if you cook birdie breads that is a very good way to hide dried fruits as well as fresh in it. And fresh or frozen mixed veggies can be cooked into another batch. My flock loves any kind of breads, so the macaw boys don't realize it is good for them when they greedily devour their 'biskits'. LOL

I am not familiar with conures, but I would just keep trying. Just like kids you may need to introduce a new food several times before they eat it. :)

forget chopping it, take a tip from Lory breeders and make a puree (like apple sauce) and include the fruits you have available. Just be sure to limit fruits as they are very high in sugar. you can do the same thing for veggies for a picky eater. The best veggies are dark green leafy veggies (Kale, Chard, Dandelion, Beet Tops) feed spinach only occasionally because of the oxalic acid, Orange veggies (carrots, squash, sweet potatoes) are excellent as well.

My little pineapple green cheek LOVES blackberries and raspberries. She's not really a fan of veggies, but will eat broccoli tops once in a while.
