I wasn't sure where to post this as it does not pertain to the health of the bird but that of its owner. Ever since I got Savannah, my arm has payed the price with countless little scratches all over it! I have been looking for a solution that would not intimidate Savannah and be both comfortable for her and myself. Long sleeves are not the answer as I very rarely where long sleeve shirts. I'm hot blooded! ;)
So I found an elbow support at my local walmart that works perfect. Even though it is for the elbow, it will wrap around my arm perfectly and is thick enough so Savannah's nails don't dig in my arm. I didn't want to put this under the Macaw thread only as I know there are others that may need something like this for other species. It was less then $8, too! I may buy a few to have at the store and home. I'm glad I found it as my doctor and my hubby have been on my case to find something so my arm doesn't keep getting scratched up! Here are some pics.
What my arm currently looks like, it's is sometimes red as well.

Savannah got right on. She has been doing really well with it and is less and less putting one claw on my hand to avoid it. :)

That's a great idea!
My arms and shoulders are usually always scratched up from Jesters nails, but I think he'd be terrified of something like that. :grumpy:

Coqui will not get on my arm with it on yet. So I have been using the same techniques one would use for harness training. I've been letting her check it out on the arm of the chair first. Letting her know it is ok. Baby steps. I think in time she will get used to it and hop on.

Thanks Wendy! It already feels better when she is on my arm. Savannah has a bad habbit of leaning toward her perch or cage as I bring her to it. So she digs her claws in me to hold on. So this arm protection is working VERY well! LOL!

WOW Blanca,
I guess many owners of larger birds know this problem of screched arms caused by the nails of our birds.
What a perfect solution you've found to solve this problem! Thanks for this great advice!

This wouldn't work for my boy as he likes to wander the area between my wrist and elbow, these supports are to short for me :( but I did make myself a protection out of an old sweater I had. Just cut off the sleeve and sew in elastic bands where your wrist and elbow goes to keep it in place, viola! Homemade protection :D

Some of you may know that Im new and have two beautiful Macaws. One of which is older and I have been trying to get her used to me seeing how I was told she doesnt like females. Doing so I have been biten several times on my forarm and one pretty bad one on the end of my middle finger! I try to give her treats she likes and one of her biggest problems was that she was closed up in her cage most of her life and now I am letting her out to have the freedom she deserves. Doing that means I have to get her back in her cage at night. My B&G has always slept in my room on her perch. She has never gotten off of it, then she comes out side each day. The new Scarlet gets down off her perch and CAN NOT BE TRUSTED!!!! So my question is... Is there some way I can pritect my arm from bites??? I know it takes time and I am trying to give it to her but also try to give her freedom by letting her out of her cage each day! Any suggestions would help!
Ouch, I get so hurt when my little mini bites I could imagine how much it would hurt from a Scarlet. Does she have a special treat she really likes? If so I would let her see me put it in her cage in hopes she would go to the cage to get it.
This is an article that I found that might help,

If you can try talking to her a bunch and letting her look at you it does take time I got my lucky boy two months ago and he has now picked me over my hubby as I spend more time trying to understand him lol I'm also a new parrot owner

Yikes, I know a green wing who has the grip of a baby too! Most every other large macaw I have had the pleasure of holding has understood after the age of 5 months or so, that they don'tneed to grip so hard.. but my boy Mombo who is 32 STILL grips like hes 3 months old! I get cuts, bruises, and red marks that last all day too on my arm! Glad you found a solution for your lady!(:

I would recommend target training if you haven't already! Getting ANY bird back in a cage, tamed or not, can be difficult. Try target training her, and you will be able to ask her to go back in the cage by herself ( or ask her to step up on a perch/your arm ) and then put her in the cage and give her the "good" command and a big ole treat! Nash is a wonderful example of the benefits of target training and goes into his cage ANY time I ask, even if he is having a lot of fun outside... he always goes in because he knows it's treat time!

When my arms start getting all scratched up I do something silly like getting the nails done. Problem solved.

My Peachfront conure has short nails, but they are like little needles when she is walking along my arm. She has all kinds of perches so she is able to keep them short enough, but they are really pointy and she does not accept me touching her toes so I can buff them. I may look into getting some arm coverings as well.

Ever try these perches? The surface is smooth where the bottom of the foot is resting so it doesn't get roughed up there but the nail tips tend to be smoothed down a while longer in my experience.

I have one of those for my eclectus and Alexandrine. I might try the smaller version for Peachiegirl.
